Why is concrete pavement generally more prevalent in urban areas than rural areas?
Ironically, there isn't a concrete reason.
This answer is not getting enough attention. Phenomenal answer!

Vibratex, seeing as how they already have a partnership with Hitachi.

There are four "yield" signs in this photo (two of them are to the viewer's left facing away from the camera viewpoint). The cross-street has stop signs (one is visible to the left). What is the purpose of the "yield" signs? (Note: These are all new. Google Street View won't show them if you view that intersection.)

A Yield sign means you don't have to stop.  If you had to stop, then they'd have put up Stop signs instead, duh.  Those Yield signs are posted to let you know that cross-traffic has the stop signs, so you're fine to just drive right through.

Based on what I saw there this past Friday afternoon, I'm going to say that the person who posted the sign was picturing that TV commercial from a few years ago where three horse-drawn wagons pulled up to a crossroads and the drivers all started arguing about who should go first, until a fourth wagon driven by a woman came along and they all waved her through before returning to their argument. Based on how much the driver in front of me at that yield sign, and the drivers on the other street with the stop signs, were all staring at each other, I think the person who posted the sign wanted to see that commercial play out in real life.

Japan recently added the English language 'STOP' to their signs.  In return, some U.S. cities have begun installing Stop signs that more closely resemble the Japanese design on a trial basis.

Heh. I wish that were the real rationale. Further down the street they installed two of the worst raised crosswalks I've ever seen. I haven't taken a photo of those, but the raised part is basically at sidewalk level and the "ramp" part for cars to use is more sharply angled than anything I've seen elsewhere.

Make it confusing enough and nobody will go through the intersection.  Voilà, instant improvement in safety statistics.

The sign shop had some extra metal they needed to get rid of so they gave them to the city to install

There's been a local epidemic of sign stealing, and the city figured hanging up some cool triangle signs would distract the thieves from the actually useful signs.
