Quote from: Beltway on April 19, 2026, 09:05:49 PMI would have hoped that eventually they would replace those bridges with ones with modern span lengths. It has been 3/8 of a century and they have not done so.
Looks like the Buck Rd. overpass (approx. MP 348.2) is scheduled for replacement over the next few years. Maybe the new bridge will accommodate an eight-lane Turnpike, but we shall see...
I do remember seeing documentation years ago, I believe from Montgomery County, that envisioned an 8-lane Turnpike from Fort Washington to Bensalem, and ten lanes from Mid-County to Fort Washington, along with new and/or improved interchanges.
That whole 1988 Six Lane Widening Project (Plymouth Meeting to US-1) is now over 100,000 AADT. Eight lane territory. Given the wide interchange spacing (6, 4, 8) I can see the need for 2 or 3 new ones.

None of this is on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Statewide Total Reconstruction Initiative map of Dec. 2025.

Yeah I don't think there are any plans to widen any portion of the Pennsylvania Turnpike to eight lanes, I think the focus is to widen the whole road to six lanes. Even in the Philadelphia area, six lanes is generally enough except during rush hour and sometimes on weekends.

The only section that needs eight lanes is Mid-County to Ft. Washington, especially EB.  The merge from I-476 is a major choke point on weekdays, especially because of the short acceleration lane.  There are WB backups from Willow Grove to Ft. Washington but they seem to be milder.

Priority will be on extending the 6-lane rebuild to Morgantown and Allentown, though. Those projects are in design and some under construction per the Pennsylvania Turnpike Statewide Total Reconstruction Initiative map of Dec. 2025.

They do currently have new interchange plans in that area, I believe they are calling for a new connection to Norristown with Ridge Pike/Lafayette Street, an interchange with PA 63 near Willow Grove, completing the missing movements at Virginia Drive, and then adding new entrance and exit ramps at Valley Forge to connect to 1st Ave in King of Prussia (though I, like others, believe they should redo that interchange so that people going from 76 west to the turnpike west do not have to do a 20mph loop turn).

The stretch as a whole from roughly Valley Forge to the NJ state line really has transformed into a commuter highway.

Here are the documents I found regarding Montgomery County's vision for revitalizing the Turnpike corridor...

This is all from eleven years ago. The only progress so far, Turnpike-wise, has been AET and the upcoming Lafayette Street interchange.

Possibly 3 new local interchanges. I was saying that back in the 1970s.

PTC adopted their 2027, 10 year capital improvement budget yesterday.  There is a link, but only past plans come up right now.

They reference the I-95 interchange area, and that makes me wonder, I guess the Delaware River Bridge replacement will push the construction of additional ramps to and from 95 back a few more years, if that is even still in the plans at all.

The project website says that bridge is in preliminary engineering, and the six new ramps segment is future design.

The Ghostbuster

I'm glad they are eventually going to design and construct the remaining six bridges for the Interstate 95/276/295 interchange.

People in the area told me that all four quadrants will definitely be useful.
