Highways 5 and 65 could become Interstate 435 in the Des Moines metro

That term is currently suffering from a state of overuse and presents over expectations.

That argument hasn't worked in Florida.

I saw a quote that Des Moines was the largest city 'without an interstate ring', although it kinda does with 35/80 and 235. I agree that it would probably better to give the whole freeway a unified state route number. I don't see the routing providing much of a time benefit over the existing interstates for thru traffic.

A crazy thought might be to swap I-235 and 35/80 and then make I-235 a full beltway using IA 5 and US 65.

They must have meant 'largest city in Iowa'.  :-D

I'm also trying to find the Interstate ring in Fresno.

How long before we see Interstate 435 signs in the Des Moines area? I expect it will be a minimum of 10 years before we see Iowa's Interstate 435 come into fruition.

I didn't realize the Fresno metro area was so geographically large.

Well, yes, it's a mountainous area.

Is that loop used primarily by Fresno area commuters, or by long-distance drivers wishing to avoid downtown traffic?

Miami?? It's interstates barely connect by interstate... just one link on 595.

I've posted on this elsewhere, but it's ironic that Highways 5 and 65 come together again in Des Moines after they miss each other while their paths cross in Little Rock.

Highway 5 is a rare 3-state SH west of the Mississippi that keeps its number throughout. AR 5 is discontinuous through Little Rock, where it would intersect US 65, although I've heard the Main Street Bridge between LR and NLR is unsigned AR 5 on the ArDOT books.

I-435 has been added to this year's federal surface transportation bill and could be approved as soon as late winter before final FHWA discussion. DSM and hopefully IowaDOT seem to want this to happen in short order.

Since 280, 480, 680 and 880 are already used, I think 435 is the perfect number for the corridor. The two 435s will likely be far enough apart to avoid confusion.

They should go all OK and go with 438.

The Homestead Extension kind of serves as a de facto ring.

I don't see a need to duplicate the 435 number, when 835 is still completely unused.

What am I missing? Where in Iowa is another 435? Is it because of 435 in the Kansas City metro? How would that be confusing?

It would be no more confusing than renumbering, say, US-6 to be a second US-70 instead.

But why reuse a number at all when there is another unused number that also fits the pattern?

Why are there three I-235s within a day's drive of each other, but only one I-635 anywhere and no I-835 at all?

Basically, I don't like duplicate route numbers of the same class.  And I'd rather break the grid than duplicate.

It also creates a situation where I-35 would intersect both I-435's in a row without another interstate in between. I can't recall another instance where an interstate has two consecutive system interchanges with the same number but not the same interstate.

The arguments for going with I-835 are great.  But has the idea reached Iowa DOT, AASHTO's SCOURN, or FHWA?

TheHighwayMan3561

The other thing is it's likely that Kansas City will be signed as the control city for southbound/westbound I-435 in Iowa.

I-20 has it.  There's the eastern I-220 interchange at Shreveport, then about 204 miles to the east at the I-220 interchange at Jackson.  Wouldn't exist if the I-420 at Monroe, LA had been built and will go away if I-69 gets completed in Louisiana.

The potential one on I-35 could go away if I-72 ever got extended.

EDIT: It also happens on I-91, with I-291 north of Hartford and I-291 around Springfield, MA.
