I still remember the first time I watched something on a hi-def TV.  I was like, —Nope, no thank you, I do not want to see everyone's pores up close like that.

Or just get your receipt when you check in, then just leave the key in the room when you head out.

Ha. My chorus teacher in middle school had incredibly long fingernails that clack-clack-clacked whenever she would play the piano. Just prior to a concert or a musical play, she'd cut her nails so they wouldn't be so loud.
Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

I've wondered before how hard it is to type with really long nails.

I train all sorts of people on software; for some, their keyboard strokes are a form of gentle and artistic ASMR. For others, I swear they've never heard anything pleasant nor mellifluous in their lives and shall continue to audibly force us through that ever-dimming tunnel.

When I got to work this morning, I realized my cell phone only had 11% battery life remaining.  And I do two-factor authentication for multiple programs at work via text message.  It pleases me that it's now after 3pm, and I'm still at 8% charge.

One of the cable companies we work for has a retail store with an employee whose last name is Rain and whose first name starts with the letter B.  So, every so often, I run across a work order that was entered by username BRAIN.

Walmart seems to be backing down on the turnstiles.  I had to bounce in to my local one today (they're the only place in town where one can get Red Baron french bread pepperoni pizza), and the ones installed towards the end of the pandemic are now gone.  Maybe next time I have any reason to go anywhere near a Walmart I'll head down to the double-story one near Crossgagtes (marked as the largest in the world on Google Maps, even though I'm pretty sure China has a larger one somewhere) to see how that works.

I love how, in mixed company, there's a decent chance that someone will feel the need to morally justify going to Wal-Mart.  Kind of like a Baptist explaining why he went to a liquor store.

When I got my current job in 2002, the apartment I got was close to work (outside New Castle, DE), and around the corner from the Wal-Mart there.  (I would walk there many times in my 3 1/2 years in that apartment.)

So then . . .

When I secured the apartment, I called my mother to tell her the news.  After all, it did mean I'd (finally) be moving out soon.

She asked me where it was, and I gave her names of a few roads in the area, thinking she'd have some idea where the apartment was from that.  (She'd lived in Newark for 20 years at that point.)  At the end, I added "by the Wal-Mart".

She responded, "The Wal-Mart's in Elkton [Maryland]."  Yes, that's where the nearest Wal-Mart was to our house at the time.  (The current one in Elkton probably still is.)

A little while later, I was at my parents' house for some gathering.  A good friend of my parents asked me where I was living, and again I said "by the Wal-Mart" at the end.

My father immediately jumped in with "Oh no, we don't shop at Wal-Mart."

tchafe1978

To paraphrase Yogi Berra relative to Walmart, "That place is so crowded, nobody goes there anymore." Somehow almost nobody seems to like to admit to shopping at Walmart, or will claim to like Walmart, and everybody can rag on Walmart, yet somehow they're still the largest retailer in the world.

TheCatalyst31

Wal-Mart doesn't sell high quality stuff, the ambiance leaves a lot to be desired, and their anti-union policies make them a pariah in some political circles. But they're cheap and they're big enough that they probably have whatever specific thing you're looking for, so people keep shopping there despite their feelings about the place.

Sure, Walmart remains convenient, but in most cases, I find Amazon even more convenient and they seem to have less of a stigma, despite their own inhumanity towards labor.  Can't imagine why.

I just get what I need at work at the military exchange.  That way I don't have to trudge my way to nearest big box mega store and sea of humanity contained within.  Usually we sell stuff slightly under what the real world does and there isn't a sales tax.
