The bash shell on Unix normally uses $ as its prompt character instead of >. If you are logged in as the administrator, it changes to #.

Quote from: ZLoth on August 04, 2026, 04:04:43 AMWhy would you use a text editor to edit a executable? If you were on a MS-DOS machine, the system startup files were config.sys and autoexec.bat. Like many other people, I also used QEMM to better manage the lower 640k of memory as well as the upper memory above 1 GB.

Aha!  Yes, I misremembered.  It was C:\>edit autoexec.bat.

Since my memory is apparently falling apart lately...  Am I crazy, or didn't the DOS prompt used to be just C:\ before changing to C:\>?

What your prompt looked like is dependent on the MSDOS PROMPT command, and most everyone put PROMPT $P$G as the second line in the autoexec.bat file after @echo off. In fact, if you open up a command prompt and do a SET commend, you will see the line PROMPT=$P$G.

Thanks.  Chalk it up to a false memory, I guess.

Ah, thank you for the reminder!  I just opened up the Windows command prompt to give  prompt $P  a try, and it definitely looks very, very wrong that way.  Even  prompt $P\  looks completely wrong.

Meh.  Being sick means not being able to do the things I want to do.  Don't make me sick.

The week COVID vacation after Thanksgiving in 2022 was pretty nice.  I would have otherwise been around panicking retail employees playing down to a diminished Black Friday sales weekend.  Tucked up in bed with disease was the superior outcome.

Hmmm, good question.  I think it's the state, for me personally.  Also, whenever I think about 'Mississippi' in that context, I immediately also think about how I learned to spell it as a kid:

M, dot, funny letter, funny letter, dot, funny letter, funny letter, dot, humpback, humpback, dot

I do occasionally.  More often, it's 'one-thousand' in between.

My face can do that to people.  My current avatar is less filter-adjusted than the old one, so you're now getting a more unfiltered version of me.  It it becomes unbearable, then I recommend taking a three-minute break from the screen and walk around outside for a bit before returning.

I actually enjoyed seeing your latest avatar. For awhile I couldn't fathom why that thing had a black mass underneath the nose. I actually (no offense, hard feelings or anything similar) thought it was a dog's face.

Your previous avatar helped, but it still wasn't clear. This latest one has it nice and clear.

My sweet spot is 1985.  If I put on a mix of radio hits from 1985, then I know and like almost every song that comes on.

Last night Cade Cavalli threw eight innings of one-hit ball for the Nationals against the Cubs.

Meanwhile, the Cubs' pitcher for the final three and a third innings was Aaron Civale. Under the circumstances, I was slightly disappointed to learn that his last name is pronounced with a soft "c" sound (si-VAH-lee).
