For what it's worth, I spent quite a bit of time a couple of years ago trying to find any record of the actual research behind the claim that fractions were to blame, and I never did find anything.  Considering that the claim comes from the inside, it's possible that A&W simply never published it anywhere, but it's also possible he just made something up in his book and now everyone takes his word for it.
