Typically, the clientele is a fair bit classier on an airplane than on a Greyhound bus.

You'd be surprised.

Quote from: Max Rockatansky on August 22, 2026, 10:04:01 PMI've never found there to be much variance in modern times.  Back when I was younger I recall some people still wearing suits or getting dressed up for a flight.

As my mother painfully reminds me, people also used to dress up when going shopping as well. When did we get away from that? For me, at least wear shoes, socks, clean slacks, and a polo shirt that is clean and doesn't smell. Thank goodness those damn ties went away. But, there are those folks who dress so slovenly that you wish there was a dress code that was enforced.

Yes, there have been times that I went to WalMart wearing a shirt, shorts, and shoes. But, I was using the pickup where they load up your trunk, and I never left the vehicle.

I'm sure they would be blocked from future flights with the airline. Which would suck if you were on the outbound portion of a round-trip ticket.

Your mother may be the last person in America who's offended by anyone wearing shorts to a Wal-Mart.

I remember my mom dressing up a bit and taking little me to San Francisco for shopping.  Yes, dresses for the women, and shirts and ties for the men was pretty common for that neighborhood. It would be Union Square area, because things from more casual areas would be available closer to home.  It was the early to mid 1960s.   In the late 60s fashions everywhere in the U.S. got much more casual.

Max Rockatansky

Modern Big Box retail has gotten pretty trashy in general.  Save dressing to the nines for an actual worthwhile occasion.

I rode Greyhound once, and once only, back in 2005. I didn't have issues myself, but I saw two people get arrested that were on my bus and there was a woman performing "services" for drugs in the back of the bus. There is quite a difference.

Hah, about 5% of the adult shoppers at my local WalMarts wear pajamas during daylight hours. That's their prerogative. There's times I need something at the hardware store after working the yard all day, or perhaps after going on a date with my wife; I'm definitely not dressed the same but I'm still their customer. If The Home Depot is offended by my shirt that proclaims "I made a child sacrifice to Lowe's so I could purchase a MERV-10 HVAC filter here" then maybe we can have that discussion in private.

Dress code seems to vary on regional location. If you're less than a mile from the beach, don't go whining about seeing folks in t-shirts and swimsuits in a grocery store. Have to sit for five hours in a cramped airplane? Don't complain about people wanting to be as comfortable as possible. The "good old days" could discriminate for any reason, and while you may not like the person in seat 23B that just opened a tin of King Roland sardines at 34000 feet, if you draw too many lines in the sand, we ain't got no beach left.

How someone else dresses has almost nothing to do with you. This isn't just your world.

The only time I've had someone approach me to sell me drugs was inside a Greyhound station.  The only time I've had someone try to sell me wristwatches from the inside of a trench coat was outside a Greyhound station.

Ha. Seems like whenever I travel abroad, if I'm by myself, I get offered hookers and blow within a day of arrival. Off the top of my head - Philippines, Japan, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Mexico, Thailand (duh), Spain, Morocco, Honduras, Kenya...

I never have been offered illicit drugs or prostitution.  Then again I'm told that I have an unfriendly disposition.

Max Rockatansky

Actually scratch the drug part.  A shoplifter at Dillard's offered me five pounds of marijuana bricks to her go back in 2005.  I don't know if that qualifies since I wouldn't have been technically "buying."

Indeed. And to elaborate on this...when you dress up, you are either doing it for yourself (because dressing up feels nice) or for someone else.

Personally, I don't feel like dressing up makes me feel nice enough to justify the effort, and also most clothing with formal connotations in American culture was developed with the climate of somewhere like Connecticut in mind, not Southern Nevada. There is formal wear developed for warm and humid climates, but because of where and why it was developed it puts out an "Antebellum South" vibe that is not particularly well received, and sticks out.

So that leaves dressing up to situations where I need to impress other people. And going to the grocery store is very much not one of those situations. The cashier is going to sell me peanut butter no matter how I'm dressed, the other customers are going to be aggravatingly in the way no matter how I'm dressed...so what's the point?

Hookers are legal in ten Nevada counties, so an offer of hookers in those counties is as innocent as Lowe's offering you bungee cords and industrial fans.

Sorry, I meant morally, not legally.

Also, now I'm getting a kick out of imagining a prostitute on the street corner trying to sell bungee cords to passers-by.

This is such within the bounds of plausible Vegas behavior that I got stuck trying to determine which street it'd be most likely to happen on. Definitely has Nellis Boulevard vibes, but they've got that U-Haul place on Boulder Highway...
