Minor things that bother you

I'm lucky enough to live in such a rural area that we don't have Kroger or Walmart delivery for groceries, although I'm told the local Save-a-Lot offers DoorDash.

At any rate, I often order things like cat food, canned goods, bagged snacks, etc. for pickup at Walmart, but I would never order fresh meat, produce, or dated items such as bread from a pickup or delivery service. I want to physically go in the store and inspect such items and pick out the ones I specifically want. I'm going to search for the bread and milk with the farthest away date, the cut of meat that I think looks the best, and the biggest cantaloupe. I don't want someone else to pick those items for me. I want to do it myself.

Saudi Arabia is on my short list of places to visit next. I want to go to the mountainous regions more than the desert, but maybe while I'm there I can knock off Bir Tawil.

Marie Byrd Land is definitely more my kind of place, as I tend to love cold/remote way more than skin-scorching/remote, hence my previous trips to Svalbard, Iceland, and Adak.

Minor thing that bothers me. My workday starts at 8:00 my time. Often, meetings are scheduled between 7:00-8:00, but I can't attend because I get my son ready for day care and bring him there. So often times I'm rushing to make it home in time for said 8:00 meeting due to the variance in a 4-year-old's eagerness to dress himself and walk to the car.

I have a standing meeting at 8:00 on Wednesdays with my Bangalore counterpart. There is also another review meeting scheduled at the same time, that I don't need to attend, but my counterpart often does. I have requested him to change the time of our 1:1 to make it so that the meetings don't coincide, but he always says he will and then fails to do so. So, approximately 99% of Wednesdays, I bust my ass to get my kiddo ready for school and back in time for a meeting that he either a) cancels at 7:55 or, like today, b) just fails to show up to.

I love my job.

The onus is upon me to follow up on unanswered email communications.  Follow up phone calls or emails of escalating severity tend to work me.  If I need to I'll just call the applicable supervisor of whoever isn't responding.

So much of my area of responsibility is so spread out through much of Central California (and occasionally Fallon, Nevada).  What people are willing to respond to via email quickly in Lemoore might be something Monterey drags their feet on or Moffett Field won't even acknowledge.

Most of the actual meetings I end up being dragged into is in Lemoore.  The problem with the style of meetings there is that department heads treat it as a participation trophy game.  If a topic doesn't have relevance to the entire group it ought not be shared (IMO).  For example; I don't need a 20 minute synopsis of which cashiers are great at signing up people for shit like store credit cards.

See, my thinking is...if someone never answers my email, I have written proof that I tried to address something and other people never did their part. So I'm in the clear, and I can show the proof to someone else.

See, my thinking is...if someone never answers my email, I have written proof that I tried to address something and other people never did their part. So I'm in the clear, and I can show the proof to someone else.

Whereas if I go to a meeting in person and bring it up, everyone can just pretend it never happened and blame me...

Funny, I used to use the reverse against a General Manager who had it out for me.  She would try to trap me into answers through emails quite often.  Usually I would just go have a chat with her to talk about whatever she sent me an email about.  Generally I would write myself an email about the conversation after and save it in a CYA file.

Facebook is being an ass again and making it impossible to use the "most recent" feed with FBPurity and tracking protection enabled.  It results in lots of missing posts and the "you're all caught up" error after not very long.  I have to disable everything and go with the stock Facebook code (including sponsored posts, a bunch of other posts I don't want, and algorithmicly filtered comments on posts).  It's honestly enough to make me want to delete my account because the whole site has gotten very frustrating to deal with, but then I remember all the roadgeek stuff I'd miss out on because of people who aren't here and the community not being on places like Reddit.  Why is the roadgeek community stuck on Facebook?

Reddit is full of crazy people like K12, so no thanks.  The forum isn't perfect as recent spamming issues this year highlight.  Did we forget the Dolphin Wars already? 

Facebook is pretty a pretty approachable interface.  That's why you have so many normals and boomer types in larger road groups.  Facebook also has groups for overlanding, sports touring, deep dive history and other like road topics that barely get touched here.

It doesn't hurt that Meta/Facebook is willing to throw a couple engagement bucks the way of hobby pages.  It isn't a lot but it isn't something I'll turn down either.  If I can figure out how engagement works on stuff like TikTok you can bet we will establish a presence. 

Try searching for specific phrases on Facebook.  Use the filter "posts I've seen" if you are trying to reference something super specific.  I don't tend to have the same issues you frequently speak of.

Facebook is pretty a pretty approachable interface.

Maybe if you've been using it for nine hundred years. I hardly ever interact with it, so any time I actually need to try and do something there I find the interface overwhelming and unpredictable...which is part of the reason why I never go there.
