I see a town that was bypassed to the east by US 30, which has an at grade intersection and fails the interstate standard.

Note that US 30 west of IL 47 is on its original route (see https://catalog.archives.gov/id/538991342)

When I saw this thread I thought of examples like in reply #9. I wouldn't count any interstate or lengthy freeway unless there was a standalone bypass there first. So Lumberton NC for example would count because it was a US 301 bypass before there were interstates.

There is no way in hell that counts as even a half beltway for Sugar Grove.  For one thing, odd land annexations aside, the developed part of the town is south of IL 56 (I didn't even realize the town continued north of there until you posted that link).  For another, there are no ramps for the movements between IL 56 and I-88 that would allow people to travel the "beltway".

Do you even know what a beltway is?  It's a circular road around a city, similar to I-465.  What exists around Sugar Grove doesn't even come close.  The stuff around Sugar Grove doesn't even appear to be a bypass, as I can't see any evidence of old roads that had been bypassed.

To me, a bypass is a road built to reroute a road that originally went through a town. That doesn't appear to be what happened in Sugar Grove.

Welllllll, it's not what he intended BUT Sugar Grove actually did get a "bypass". Route 47 used to run on Main St in Sugar Grove before it was move east to the current alignment. That happened in 1937. If you look on a street map, you will see how Route 47 perfectly lined up with Main St south of town.
