The Mackinac Bridge, it's 5 miles long and connects the best Peninsula's in the world, what else do I need to say? Also, it is the only bridge I've ever seen a cop shooting a gun off of. Who else has driven across this bridge and what do you think of it?

rawr apples

Ive driven across twice, on my trip to Marquette in 2001, where I saw a ghost truck :)

Unfortunately it was cloudy and rainy when I went across so I couldnt appreciate it fully, but it was a nice drive over.

Hmm, yes it's a beautiful bridge, but your link goes to a 403 error so we can't see it.

Is that a truck that carries ghosts?  :-P

I have yet to go across it or even to the Upper Peninsula...then again, I haven't seen much of Michigan at all...so it's definitely on the to do list on my end.  Probably won't happen just yet though... :-|

no it was the middle of the night and me and my mom were driving and this tractor-trailer came up behind us and started tailgating us, so we sped up he kept on our tail, we eventually hit 90mph when a cop pulled us over. he saw no truck

always a good excuse.  I once raced a truck down the I-40 grade from Flagstaff westbound ... we must've hit 108mph.  I have no idea what he was thinking.  We passed several runaway-truck ramps so that must not have been his problem...

I crossed it once. I thought it was really cool, but I wish the bridge was at the point where I could do 70 across it instead of 45. It is a great drive.

SSOWorld

Likely the 45 is because of the lack of a median  :ded:

I crossed it a few times - got the grating on the suspension portion.

As a matter of fact, I do own the road.

Yea, it would be interesting to do 70, but I don't think I'd feel safe on it. I think large trucks have to do 25, or maybe that was just due to the weather. It's unfortunate that my link 404d, how do you just post an imagine into the post?

Hellfighter

I've been on it three times and driven it once. It's a very cool experience.

SSOWorld

The Mac seems built for a two-lane road -albeit a wide one - or a slow-four-lane.  Doing 70 on it is not possible.

You can only go 45 on it

SSOWorld

legally, you are correct.

the bridge and drive is beautiful, the only problem is traffic buildups on the bridge for the toll booth.

I got to walk across it a few years ago on Labor Day.  That's the way to really appreciate the bridge.

Another reason that the speed limit is 45 on the bridge is due to the high cross winds and the fact that the bridge will sway as much as 18 feet or so.  It's not a good idea to cross the bridge in a Yugo at a high rate of speed on a windy night when the road is icy.

Big Dave

I have been fortunate enough to cross Mighty Mac during both the day and night, on the grate and off the grate, and always in good weather.  Although I have done it many times, and so I am able to keep my cool demeanor on the outside to my passengers, on the inside I am always excited like a little kid who just found out he is going to Disney World.  It's a wondrous experience for me and I hope it stays that way forever.

Hot Rod Hootenanny

I regret to admit that I've crossed the mighty Mackinac Bridge aproxemetly 10 times.
In all seriousness, one of my younger brothers built a replica of the Mackinac as a HS art project over a decade ago.  The state of Michigan (or whichever agency in charge of the bridge) sent him a small book concerning the history and design of the bridge that he used in creating his replica.
Please, don't sue Alex & Andy over what I wrote above

Terry Shea is right about crossing the bridge in a Yugo.  In September 1989, Leslie Pluhar died when she was driving her 1987 Yugo across the bridge when it was windy and driving faster than the maximum speed limit.  As a result, she lost control and went right off the bridge between the 2 towers, and, because of the weather, it was about 10 days before her car and body were recovered.

Almost 4-got.  I'm planning on doing the Bridge Walk this coming Labor Day. :coffee:

Did the Mackinac Bridge Walk.  It was my 1st time, and I had a great time, talking with some of the other walkers as I went along, and even talked to a walker who told me he was 85 years of age. :coffee:

My mother and I recently watched an episode of "Modern Marvels" that featured the construction of the Mackinac Bridge. Very interesting!
