Have you ever seen road signs that literally state the obvious? I'm talking about like this one:

You're already on the ramp, what's the point :pan:?
What's not to like about highways and bridges, intersections and interchanges, rails and planes?

I think it's in preparation for when, or if, they start building beyond the interchange.  No sense in changing the signs out twice.

This would make sense. Not a "dumb" idea, but as of today it's pretty pointless.

IDOT will never build beyond this interchange.

This was originally built this way for the now cancelled Woodruff Expressway.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodruff_Expressway

The PA Turnpike does on its NE Extension just north of the Clarks Summit Viaduct leading in to Exit 131 where the freeway defaults onto the ramp.  There is a sign at that point that says NEXT EXIT where there is really no ramp even though it is an exit as the toll plaza was the original Exit 39 back in the day of the ticket system.  Now its the coin drop, but still that particular assembly should be worded differently or not even be there.

Or they could add suffixes and make exit 131A for I-81 and exits 131B-C for US 6 and US 11.

Along the lines of the original post:

* NB TN 840 at I-40 at Lebanon, TN:  Both a gantry and a gore sign

* I thought there was one in Nebraska somewhere, but I can't find it tonight.

That gore sign is especially dumb. There's no gore.

I don't really know if this can really be considered "dumb", but this APL contradicts itself and is extremely misleading to motorists IMO.

It is technically correct, but has been signed poorly in my opinion.

Again, not sure if this is the best place to post this.

Here's another one.

https://goo.gl/maps/U9Ns8GWLPmC2

This is on K-32 about a mile west of the interchange with I-435 (https://goo.gl/maps/uz6sH9ixRdQ2). However, K-32 is not a limited access highway. It's merely a 4 lane road at this point. The only time it's close to a limited access highway is its interchange with the Turner Diagonal a couple miles downstream.  K-32 then turns to the south and east onto the Turner Diagonal.

Kaw Drive from that point on is K-32's old alignment.  The Turner Diagonal used to be K-132 until 1993. K-32 got moved south to replace K-132.

Very similar to the end of the US 3 expressway at 128 in Burlington.  The only saving graces are the button-copy shield (going or gone already), the wrong-way duplex, and the nearby parts bin flashing arrow accompanied by arrow board.  That and the last vestige of the "128=exit 25" system.

I just ran into this odd duck.

This poorly placed No U Turn sign is being blocked by the light pole. The front sign on that sign pole is a Keep Right sign.

Turns out this is the same way in all four directions at Renner and College Boulevards in Lenexa.

That's why I like it bc it's a hint of what would've and could've been.  Just like this in RI.

I only take pics of good looking signs. Long live non-reflective button copy!

The RI sign is much more sensible because it could stay there intact if/when the road were extended.  The examples that have a large part of the sign being a panel reading ALL TRAFFIC MUST EXIT (or similar) are less sensible--the sign will require either replacement or modification (or at least greenout/yellowout) if the road is extended beyond the current end--so why bother with it at all?

How exactly does it give a hint? I've never understood that sign, it always keeps being posted on this forum.

I believe that sign is posted at the end of a stub that was going to be extended, but never was.

Dumb road signs? Someone needs to post one of New York's "Text Stop" signs in this thread for it to be complete.

How come? You mean because it states the obvious, that one should stop to text?

It's not just New York who uses those. I like the idea, but it will do little to curb texting and driving.

One of more than a few in Mass that will never die.

I find it odd that the '95' is button copy, but nothing else. Doesn't seem to be a patch over the US 3 shield either.

I could have sworn I already mentioned the one in Burlington.

Button copy inside I-shields was Mass-standard in the 90s primarily.  Some shields also sported the outline of the shield and the bar between red and blue in button copy--depended on the installation.  The sign was installed brand-new to spec with the button copy numerals.

Indeed the road was slated to head toward Boston but died before that would happen.  US 3 jumps on 128 over to its old surface routing (which north of there is MA 3A/NH 3A).

No, because it's a stupid attempt to rebrand a rest area.
