Your first clinch?

What was your first clinch, be it Interstate, Federal, State, or County route? Mine was MO-115. I got bored one afternoon and drove 115 from its west end at I-70 all the way into the heart of the city of St. Louis. That was after I learned to drive.

MA 213, which is easy to clinch by accident. It's a freeway that's 3.5 miles long.

Do you mean the road had to be clinched in one pass? Otherwise, I-84 is the only 2-digit interstate I've been on in its entirety...from Dunmore, PA (next to Scranton) to Sturbridge, MA. I also live within 3 miles of it, as it just scrapes the west edge of New Britain, CT (Exit 35- CT 72 East | To CT 9 and Exit 36 - Slater Road).

I forget for County Route. Probably Suffolk County Route 92 in NY.
State Route would be NY 108 because it's really short.
I have not clinched any federal routes.
My first interstate clinch would be I-68.
I's traveled:
10(TX) 20(TX) 24(TN) 30(TX) 35(TX) 40(TN) 45(TX) 64(KY-VA) 65(TN-KY) 66(VA-DC) 68(WV-MD) 69(TX) 70(IN-MD) 71(OH) 75(TN-MI) 76(OH-NJ) 77(VA-OH) 78(PA-NJ) 79(WV-PA) 80(OH-NJ) 81(TN-NY) 83(MD-PA) 84(NY-MA) 86(PA-NY) 87(NY) 88(NY) 89(NH-VT) 90(OH-MA) 91(CT-VT) 93(MA-NH) 95(NC-MA) 99(PA)

I should have been more specific. No, not on the first pass, you could revisit the route.

I'm sure I would have clinched IN-130 by the time I turned 4 years old, based on knowing where I lived, went to school, and other basic errands that my parents had to make with me in tow at the time.
Haven't clinched any US highways yet
County roads are trivial to me. Thinking about it, though, it would have been in Scott County, IA, and if I were to take a guess, it would be Y64.
As far as Interstates go, I think it was I-88 in Illinois. Either that or 280 in the Quad Cities, but I think I clinched 88 first.

These could all be inaccurate as far as I know, since I'm digging well into my childhood for this.
Davenport, IA -> Valparaiso, IN -> Ames, IA -> Orlando, FL -> Gainesville, FL -> Evansville, IN

djsekani

First was I-375 in Michigan, though that could be considered cheating since it's so short.

First "real" clinch would be I-5 from San Diego to Seattle.

jp the roadgeek

Had to be either CT 120 or CT 364.  Both short state routes a stone's throw from where I lived when I was 16.  First Interstate was I-691. First 2 digit Interstate was I-97.  First US route was US 222.
Interstates I've clinched: 97, 290 (MA), 291 (CT), 291 (MA), 293, 295 (DE-NJ-PA), 295 (RI-MA), 384, 391, 395 (CT-MA), 395 (MD), 495 (DE), 610 (LA), 684, 691, 695 (MD), 695 (NY), 795 (MD)

As a passenger:
State Route: WYO-222
US Route: US-113
Interstate: I-180 (WY)

As a driver:
State Route: VA-171
US Route: US-113 (different time)
Interstate: I-126 (Not sure, could also be an I-x64)
Interstate (2di): I-26

noelbotevera

PA 433. I was around four or five at the time. It was about ten or so miles to the north of my house and we clinched all of it en route to a party with one of my dad's friends.

Not sure for county route.

Certainly none for US Routes (the shortest one is US 422, but even then I'm missing a huge chunk of it). I could still complete one on future roadtrips.

First Interstate is I-78. Did all of it when I was 7 on car trips to NYC.
Pleased to meet you

My first clinched highways would likely be the 403, 405, 416, 420 and QEW since they're all close to where I've lived.

My first clinched roads in the US would likely be I-295, DC 295 and MD 295 which I did when I was around 4 years old.

This is pretty tough, reaching into the depths of your roadtrip memories.

Passenger:
Probably I-59, on one of our trips from Eastern TN to see family in New Orleans. Or I-30, when we moved up to TN from Austin.
For a US highway, it could have been US 550, before it was extended to Bernalillo. We went through there when I was really young, and it's one of my earliest memories because my parents were excited by it. Ironically, I've never been on the newer section between the Rio Rancho turn-off and the Chaco Canyon turn-off, so I haven't really clinched it anymore.

Driver:
Probably I-610 in Houston, but I-45 would have been my first 2-di when I came back from Utah via Kansas and OKC.

Duke87

Would likely be either the New Jersey Turnpike and The Hutchinson River Parkway, if we allow major named highways that do not have coterminously posted numerical designations.

If not, um... well I definitely clinched I-678 at a fairly young age. It is entirely possible, however, that I clinched FL 682 before that. Depends on when the first time I went with my dad to pick someone up at JFK was (we flew out of LGA on the trip to Florida where I first clinched FL 682).
If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

Max Rockatansky

M10 in Michigan for the first State Route, I-96 for the Interstates, US 180 for first 3d US Route and US 46 for 2d US Route.  The longest Interstate I clinched was I-10 and longest US Route is US 101....yes I've moved a lot through the years.

County: N1 (Malibu Cyn. road), LA county, first post-signage ca. 1963 (passenger, later as driver)
CA State:  CA 134 (no choice, born/raised in Glendale) -- both original streets + later freeway.
First other state: NV 28 (Tahoe perimeter).
US:  199 (passenger, 1963 and as driver 1970).  Only other US clinched: 163.
(If former routes count, then US 399)
Interstate (all): I-405, CA, when route completed in '69.  Since then, have clinched all 3 iterations of I-405.
(trunk only):  Big one: I-80, on a business trip to NYC in '89.  Since then: 4,5,8,10,30,66,68,78,82,85,86 (west),88
(both), 97 (BFD!).  Close (but no cigar) with 20,40,70,90,94.  Did all available 22 freeway back in 2001 (pre-designation), when it ended at
              AL 129 near Winfield.

The High Plains Traveler

First clinch I would care about, since I really don't think clinching a state or county route is noteworthy. I drove from Minnesota to Arizona in 1988, and on the way took all of U.S. 350 in Colorado. At the time, I didn't think anything of it, but it was the first U.S. route I clinched. I've done a little better since then with Interstate and U.S. routes.

I don't remember what was my first clinch. Probably Z-40 around Zaragoza as a driver.

And which was your first up-to-standards Interstate clinched?
Supporter of the construction of several running gags, including I-366 with a speed limit of 85 mph (137 km/h) and the Hypotenuse.

Please note that I may mention "invalid" FM channels, i.e. ending in an even number or down to 87.5. These are valid in Europe.

DandyDan

As a passenger:
State route-I don't really remember, but I believe it is either MN 282 or MN 62 (the original).  Both would have been on my dad's convoluted way from my original home in Cottage Grove, MN to my grandparent's house in SW Minnesota.
Interstate-I never did clinch a 2di as a passenger, but I do believe we eventually travelled all of I-694 before I moved away from MN for good.  I don't think we ever did all of I-494 (and I know for a fact I haven't driven all of it).

As a driver-
State route- I had moved to ST. Charles, IL for high school, and I'm fairly certain this one is IL 25.
US route- After I moved here to Nebraska, I eventually did US 73 in its entirety all at once.  This was before they changed the southern end to go to I-70 instead of I-435.
Interstate-I-88 for 2di's and I-280 in IA and IL for 3di's.

I have no idea. My best guesses:

As a passenger, I-495 (VA/DC/MD), though it could be I-395 (VA/DC) or I-270 (MD). For a state route, I would guess VA-236. I don't know which came first, state or Interstate.

As a driver, probably I-395 (VA/DC) or I-295 (DC/MD) and VA-236. My parents have lived off 236 since the early 1980s. Again I don't know whether state or Interstate came first, but I think Interstate because Dad had me on the Beltway within a week of getting my learner's permit.

For US highways, I believe US-211 is the only one I've clinched, period.

I'm surprised this thread has lasted so long without someone busting on the reference to a "Federal" highway.

"That sounded stupid, didn't it?"

US 41

For me.

Interstate: I-465
US Hwy: N/A
State: IN 163
County: Edgar County Rte 2 (an extension of IN 163 to Paris, Illinois)
Provincial (Canada): ON 108 (first foreign clinch)
Estado (Mexico): CHIH 200

Near first clinches
US 150 in my home state (I haven't drove the section from Loogootee to Shoals. I took SR 550 instead.)
I-44 would be my first 2DI clinch, but I shunpiked it across Oklahoma using OK 66, US 81, and TX 79. I'd like to clinch I-72 by the end of the year.
You could also count Chihuahua 200 as a near clinch. I probably didn't drive less than a mile of it into Manuel Benavides. I drove to the "Benvenidos (Welcome to) Manuel Benavides" sign and then turned around.
Visited States and Provinces:
USA (48)= All of Lower 48
Canada (5)= NB, NS, ON, PEI, QC
Mexico (9)= BCN, BCS, CHIH, COAH, DGO, NL, SON, SIN, TAM

NWI_Irish96

IN 106, on the very first day I ever drove.
Indiana: counties 100%, highways 100%
Illinois: counties 100%, highways 61%
Michigan: counties 100%, highways 56%
Wisconsin: counties 86%, highways 23%
