Quote from: vdeane on May 07, 2026, 09:42:24 PMI feel like I opened Pandora's Box at work.  We have a convenience store that sells some hot stuff leading up to lunch.  I've never been there before this week, but they brought in chicken over rice on Monday.  I've been looking for a good chicken over rice that's conveniently accessible to me for 12 years now.  After confirming with my coworker that they take credit cards (IIRC the previous store there didn't), I went down and had one of the best chicken over rices I had in a long time.  Of course, now that I've been to the store and know the lay of the land, there's no mental hurdle to going back (especially seeing as I work on the first floor, so it's just a short walk way).  So today I went back and got another.  And the pizza that they had in the warmer smelled really good.  Yep, Pandora's Box is open now... it's gonna be harder to stick with the cheerios I keep in my desk every day now!

I've heard that they have good sandwiches too.

The convenience store in my office building has been closed for quite a while now.  Probably over a year.  Last owner got into tax trouble.  The space is just too small, I figure.  Little wonder no other vendor's come in, but it's rather pathetic to have that empty space in the building.

I wonder if telecommuting is an issue.  50 Wolf used to be able to support both the convenience store and a take-out place pre-pandemic, but not post-pandemic.  I think they've given up on making another attempt at getting a tenant for the take-out space.  No idea what it's used for now, but probably storage.  It's amazing how many spaces that were formerly other things are now storage.  Even old cubes, offices, and conference rooms - which we then complain we don't have enough of.

I don't even remember the take-out place at 50 Wolf Road.

Lately several of my wife's family and friends have been referring to my dog Sonny as "Fred."  We adopted Sonny from my mother-in-law after she had to move out her trailer due to issues with dementia.  I'm to understand that "Fred" apparently is a slang nickname locally for someone who lived in a trailer park.

Both are at least terriers.  Sonny is a Jack Russell mixed probably with a Dachshund.  The "Fred" reference would be pretty amazing if it is some sort of subconscious cultural deep memory of I Love Lucy.

I'm currently auditing some stuff at work from Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  When I'm setting the date range every so often, I say to myself "5/7 to 9".  And so I keep thinking about the chain of mall stores from the 80s and 90s.  Anyone else remember those?

Their parent company is Rainbow, which I don't remember existing in Oklahoma, so when I moved here I thought they were a local chain named after the street.

Apparently this forum has been on to something.  John Oliver just took one of our memes mainstream with some coverage on kamikaze dolphins.

There is only one Kern County in the United States.  I only recently found this out for myself when people kept complaining on our Facebook page about not knowing where Kern County was.  I would have thought such a short county name would have at least one other instance.

Well, it's understandable that they'd be confused. It's the only county in the United States that has its borders adjusted as needed to ensure proper spacing with the other local jurisdictions.

Heh, now that's the kind of reply that deserves a "like."

I didn't realize until just this past week or two—from watching an episode of Mr Bean and an episode of Victoria—that there are Canada geese in England.

I have to drive my wife and her cousin to Las Vegas tomorrow morning.  My wife's aunt who just relocated from West Virginia to live with her son due to illness related to a brain tumor apparently is getting sent to hospice.  I've never actually met this aunt and I'm to understand she wasn't on speaking terms with most of my wife's family away before getting sick.

We had originally planned on heading to Las Vegas next weekend to see my wife's aunt.  I guess on one hand I'm glad we aren't doing this on a holiday weekend.  On the other hand, I'm not looking to two days back-to-back of really boring drives I've done dozens of times since my wife can't get Monday off.

I'm not really even sure what exactly my obligation is beyond just being the driver and maybe shoulder to cry on for my wife?  My wife is pretty serious about getting this in since she proposed staying overnight at Railroad Pass and even Primm.  It just feels weird not having a frame of reference at all despite being in the middle of all this.

I'd be politely supportive of your wife.  But you don't owe her or the aunt a show of grief.  And if your wife says something like "You don't really need to be here while I visit with Auntie", don't ask "Are you sure?", just jump at that opportunity and go do something else.

Amusingly the first thing she said when tonight after getting home was that I could just drop her off.  I'll probably stick around for a half hour or so just in case her cousin makes an appearance.

Yes, sticking around for a little bit would be gracious, and also give them a chance to ask if they need an errand or something you could do with the car.

So, airports.... are they travel hubs or overpriced shopping centers? From my experience, they're both. After all, they have a captive audience, and the premiums paid by the business is passed along in higher pricing to the customer. I would much prefer that more of the restaurants are either local chains in the area or a regional chain. But, the bills have to be paid, so that is a smattering of national chains as well.

What has me scratching my head is the some of the stuff being sold at the airport. For instance, does anyone purchase their luggage at the airport? I usually order my luggage through Amazon which is cheaper.

The model is making money off stressed and absent-minded people who may have forgotten something in the rush to get out of the house, or may decide they need more capacity for holding their souvenirs or clothes or whatever.
