History of the forum?
« on: July 29, 2023, 11:15:08 AM »

I've been wondering for the last few days. How did the AARoads forum come to be? Who were the founding members? How did it develop into the forum we know today? etc.

I did take a look at the oldest existing public thread on this board, though:

https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=3

I'm guessing the first and second topics were among the mods.

Simple, if you want to create your own country just sneak it in on some bureaucratic document that nobody will proofread.  If anyone calls you out on it then threaten them with the long arm of the law that is Eureka PD.

A few threads from over the years to help satisfy your curiosity:

https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=2122
https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=15776
https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=18579
https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=19850
https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=24280

That second link is just cursed to read. It's funny watching someone complain left and right about moderation when none would be needed if that person knew how to pump the brakes occasionally.

It was only through shame that the nation could thrive.  Truly visionary to see the that Golden Path for Alanland held such strife.

TheAlan360’s self sacrifice led to Mankind and Goatkind spreading through the Oblasts in “The Scattering.”   Never again would man nor goat be doomed to extinction due to contentment and stagnation.

I hereby propose that Oblasts be renamed to Great Goat Provinces. Goats are more important than people in Alanland, and it is best if we honor them through renaming Oblasts to Great Goat provinces. If anyone disagrees with me, that's fine. But if you want to argue, than Alan Merritt will take you to prison. Because me and him are working on many fictional Interstates across america. Including I-1, more on that in Fictional.

I was going to chide you against trying to make waves against Alanland as a newbie, but I also don't want to get in trouble with the Eureka Police Department*.

Well, just to get this straight. Alan Merritt is currently building many interstates for me as part of Alanlands expansion to newly found islands. But if he's retiring as Grand Alan, than what will happen after that? There are no other good Grand Alan candidates. Why? Because Alan Merritt has done many things for Alanland.

The Sbarro Oblast is currently under renovation as Sbarro Great Goat Province. Alan Merritt ordered me to do this stuff for him. He's too busy developing Quindaro into a major metropolis with flying cars. Creating new neighborhoods is his main priority, but he also plans to merge Sbarro and Quinn Great Goat Provinces into one by 2025.

The reason why me and Merritt are doing this is because of Nimbya. We can't let Nimbya know all of our secret plans, so as a result we will seem like an entirely different country, but we are still Alanland. And we will make this change.

Alan Merritt also wants to divide Large Great Goat Province into 5 GGP's: Register GGP, Tropicana GGP, Merritt GGP, Diesel Sabe GGP and Colfax GGP. This will help with the new found growth in Alanland, and it will also hide us from every country.

However, after reading some Quindaro newspapers, it seems like residents aren't satisfied with this change. One even said they wanted to start a war. But we can't have that. So Alan Merritt and I are currently developing high-tech machines that will guard areas of war in Quindaro.

Finally, I want to announce that Alan Merritt doesn't plan to step down. He will do his best to keep Alanland thriving and healthy. And protect it if Nimbya or angry residents threaten war.

To be fair, the one he made is more like this.  The one we know was actually created by Scott while we were all marveling that TheAlan360 inserted a fictional country in the list of the "15 North American countries" for the thread originally titled "North American Interstate System".  The rest, as they say, is history (incidentally, the Perkins Union thread is a romp too).  I assume that this Alanland is unrelated.

The creation timeline of the iconic “Guess the ___”  threads:

May 9, 2021: Guess the speed limit challenge is created.

I think that’s all of them.
There were actually a few (since deleted) very early in the forum's history.  The most infamous was "Guess the Highway" where people posted sign photos with all identifying information blanked out and people had to guess where it was.  "Guess the Highway" did not survive the end of the V'Ger era and the purging of the Forum Games board.

In fact, Alanland is in open hostility with Alanland:
Quote
Foreign Affairs

Alanland welcomes relations with all micronations. However, we openly declare hostilities towards these nations:

Republic of Alanland(due to plagarism of our great name)

The Alanland in Eureka is under Esperantist Republic of Alanland.

The Alanland in Quindaro is and is not on that wiki, but it is on Quindaropedia, of course.
