The two existing approaches should remain in place but should simply be extended a bit further out over the water, and the road to either side should be realigned to provide a longer straightaway on approach so that drivers can build up the necessary speed to jump the gap in the style of Bo and Luke Duke.

Except that never worked for Sheriff Rosco.

Doesn't that just underscore that my answer is not a good one? And isn't the goal of the thread to give a bad answer?

A panel is added above the traditional mile marker with space for a corporate logo.  Companies bid each year for ad space on a given highway stretch's mile markers, and the money goes toward highway improvement projects.

Each direction's "mile 0" would be located at the beginning of the route in that direction with markers ascending in the direction of traffic.  So northbound would have mile 0 at the south end and increase as you head north, and southbound would have mile 0 at the north end and increase as you head south.  Exit numbers would be adjusted accordingly.

If you reverse that, it's actually not that bad.  If every highway counted down to zero, that would be handy.
