I had lettuce on a DiBella's sub Sunday, though it looked older than one would want on a sub.  At the time I was under the impression this was a Taco Bell problem and am wondering if maybe that might have not been the best idea.

The only time I ever had difficulty getting lettuce was the result of an E Coli outbreak in Manitoba, since there are only so many places suitable to grow lettuce in Canada. This must have been in 2018 or 2019.

It's Taylor Farms, a company supplying many grocery and restaurant chains. Taco Bell got the blame by memes and reputation, but they pulled their lettuce pretty quickly. And it's not like their restaurants have a little farm out back.

Initially it was traced to Taylor Farms iceberg, but there may be a recurring or more widespread problem.

Since I hate lettuce, I use (my favorite vegetable) cabbage in my homemade soft flour tortilla taco wraps.  And since I like cabbage very much, I also like to use cabbage on my sandwiches, tacos, pizza, stir-fry, Indian thali plates, and more.  Cabbage has fiber too!

There were no bags of the shredded iceberg lettuce I usually buy at my local Walmart last time I went. By the time I found out the news, I actually had already eaten an entire bag of recalled lettuce from my last shopping run, the Walmart store brand one which I believe is supplied by Taylor Farms. No symptoms of anything- so far.

Since I hate lettuce...

But how can you hate something that barely even has a taste?

I like lettuce (and cabbage) just fine, but spinach and kale are also good substitutes if you want a different leafy green until this blows over. The trouble for me is food I don't make myself. I was traveling last week, and lettuce-based salads are one of the easier ways to get some vegetables in with the road food, so hopefully I didn't eat any contaminated stuff.

We don't buy iceberg lettuce, so I haven't paid attention to that. We buy romaine and it was readily available as of this past weekend.

The trouble for me is food I don't make myself. I was traveling last week, and lettuce-based salads are one of the easier ways to get some vegetables in with the road food, so hopefully I didn't eat any contaminated stuff.

Believe me, the restaurant managers were the first ones to figure out where their lettuce came from and whether they should pull it or not.

That doesn't stop people from avoiding restaurant lettuce of course.  I've got a friend who works at a tex-mex fast food chain around here, and they get their lettuce from a farm in the area, but sales are way down anyway because apparently people think restaurants have just decided to keep selling contaminated food.

I like both cilantro leaves and coriander seeds.  When cilantro gets older than just a few days, though, it loses its characteristic flavor, and then it's not worth eating.  I put a little ground coriander in a whole lot of things I cook, and I grind up toasted ones in the mortar—in addition to the leaves—when I make green salsa.

The produce shelves at the Walmart Supercenter I visit are not completely empty of lettuce or similar products, but those shelves are severely under-stocked. I often buy these big plastic containers of leafy spinach, bok choy and other healthy stuff. The store is running low on those. There aren't many heads of iceberg lettuce for sale there. I prefer romaine lettuce, but there isn't much of that either.

Chopped up some romaine for dinner yesterday (taco salad).  Went to the store after the gym last night and bought a couple of bags of salad mix to go with today's dinner (naan pizzas).
