Serving as a bypass of Downtown, the South Mountain Freeway represents the southwest quadrant of the Loop 202 beltway system around the Phoenix metropolitan area. Opened December 2019, the South Mountain Freeway spans 22 miles and 15 interchanges between I-10 in western reaches of Chandler and I-10 at Maryvale in Phoenix.

Arizona Loop 202 West

Passing under Interstate 10 (Maricopa Freeway) the South Mountain Freeway extends Loop 202 westward from the Santan Freeway on a 22 mile course through southwest Phoenix.

Prior to the South Mountain Freeway opening December 2019, Loop 202 defaulted onto Pecos Road west of the I-10 exchange.

Loop 202 lines the Gila River Indian Reservation as it advances west across Ahwatukee Foothills Village. The freeway meets 40th Street (Exit 56) next.
