State Route 136
California State Route 136 stems east from U.S. 395 at Lone Pine to encircle Owens Lake. Located west of the Inyo Mountains, the often-dry Owens Lake was once comparably full of water, until water was transported south through the Los Angeles Aqueduct to serve Southern California. SR 136 turns southeast along the mountains to join SR 190 beyond the unincorporated community of Keeler. - 11/10/2008
California 136 connects U.S. 395 with California 190 in the Eastern Sierra, from Lone Pine southeast to Keeler around the north edge of often-dry Owens Lake.
East
Leaving the intersection with U.S. 395 in Lone Pine, the first right turn leads into the Eastern Sierra Visitors Center. The visitors center features tourist information for the Eastern Sierra.

Distance sign posted along SR 136 east of U.S. 395 at Lone Pine. 133 miles away, Death Valley Junction referenced State Route 127. This mileage sign was fairly old and was subsequently replaced by 2012.

The replacement mileage sign completely revised the list of destinations via California 136 and California 190 east. The sign instead references Panamint Springs (47 miles), Stovepipe Wells (77 miles), and Furnace Creek (102 miles).

After making the arc around the eastern and northern edge of Owens Lake, California 136 converges with U.S. 395. Prior to the intersection with U.S. 395 in Lone Pine is the Eastern Sierra Visitors Center.

Mount Whitney rises west of Lone Pine. U.S. 395 (Three Flags Highway) travels north to Bishop and Reno, Nevada. U.S. 395 south connects with SR 14 to Los Angeles and Interstate 15 to San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego.
