Interstate 20 East - Birmingham to Pell City

The resurfacing of I-20 from U.S. 11 (1st Avenue N) to U.S. 78 at Exit 140 (ALDOT, 2022) included permanently closing the loop ramp at Exit 130 B on September 16, 2024 (WBRC, 2024). This cut off access from I-59 south onto I-20 east for U.S. 11, but also eliminated a weaving traffic pattern.

Connecting I-20 east beyond the separation with I-59 north to U.S. 11 (1st Avenue N), Exit 130 A was expanded in 2024 to include a signalized left turn for U.S. 11 north to the Wahouma community in addition to the original movement to U.S. 11 south to the Woodlawn neighborhood of Birmingham.

The removal of Exit 130 B coincided with extending the third lane on I-20 another 1,250 feet (ALDOT, 2022). Sign replacements here removed the reference to U.S. 78 for Exit 132.

Replaced with a new assembly separate from a light post in 2013, the reassurance marker for I-20 at Oak Ridge Park ahead of a long viaduct spanning Georgia Road, Brussels Avenue, two Norfolk Southern Railroad lines and the Alabama and Tennessee River Railway was gone by 2022.

Oporto-Madrid Boulevard meets Interstate 20 east of the viaduct at the Eastwood neighborhood of Birmingham. The arterial runs north across Red Gap to become Madrid Avenue through the Gate City community.
The U.S. 78 shield was removed by 2021.

I-20 crests over Red Mountain and partitions with Exit 132 A to Oporto-Madrid Boulevard. U.S. 78 (Crestwood Boulevard) parallels the freeway from Woodlawn Heights east to a retail area at Oporto-Madrid Boulevard.
This sign bridge was replaced during a resurfacing project in 2013. The overheads no longer reference U.S. 78.

U.S. 78 (Crestwood Boulevard) shifts to the north side of I-20 where both routes eastbound enter the city of Irondale. Exit 133 joins the freeway with Kilgore Memorial Drive adjacent to U.S. 78 in one mile.
