The diamond interchange (Exit 128) along I-35/80 at NW 100th Street in Urbandale opened to traffic on October 15, 2008. Approved in 2016, the project took nearly two years to complete.1. The exchange at 100th Street is one of three falling within a four square mile economic development area named the "Urban Loop".2
Established by the city of Urbandale on September 26, 2017, the corridor along I-35/80 stretches south to U.S. 6 (Hickman Road) and east to Iowa 29 (Merle Hay Road). Succeeding projects along I-35/80 within the Urban Loop corridor include a half diamond interchange with Meredith Drive and a flyover ramp from I-35 north/I-80 east to Iowa 141 (Grimes Boulevard) north. Construction at Iowa 141 and Meredith Road commenced in 2019 and will be completed in 2020. Upon completion, the loop ramps from I-35/80 east to Iowa 141 and from Urbandale Drive north to I-35/80 west will permanently close. The northwestern corner of the I-35/80 loop was previously known as the Rider Corner, due to the former Rider Coal Mine located nearby.2
