I-42/U.S. 70 East - Clayton to Selma


Ramps from I-40 to the Clayton Bypass converge just beyond the Johnston County line. The first confirming marker for Interstate 42 east follows.

A diamond interchange at Exit 4 joins Interstate 42 with NC 36 west and Veterans Parkway. Veterans Parkway was previously NC 42. It was renumbered as NC 36 to reduce motorist confusion with I-42.

Veterans Parkway east from I-42/NC 36 to U.S. 70 in Clayton was downgraded from NC 42 to a state secondary route.

NC 36 overtook NC 42 west from I-42 to NC 50. NC 42 resumes west from there to the town of Fuquay-Varina. The eastern section of NC 42 runs from U.S. 70 in the town of Clayton to Wilson.

The diamond interchange (Exit 330) with Wilson's Mill Road (SR 1913) opened to traffic in 2024.

U.S. 70 shifts onto an arterial across Selma at Exit 334. The freeway becomes U.S. 70 Bypass.
