Interstate 64 East - St. Louis to O'Fallon

IL 3 northbound immediately departs Interstate 64 east beyond the split with I-55 for parallel St. Clair Avenue north. IL 3 heads northwest to National City and an interchange with Interstate 70.

Exit 4 follows in one half mile at N 15th Street in East St. Louis. Construction in 2011 was a part of the I-70 Mississippi River Bridge project to upgrade I-64 leading away from the new I-70 alignment. Work included replacing the 9th and 10th Street bridges (pictured here) and relocating the off-ramp (Exit 4) from adjacent St. Clair Avenue at 15th Street, one block southward at Wabasha Avenue.

15th Street connects Interstate 64 with Summit Avenue to the west and Lincoln Avenue to the north through the residential street grid of East St. Louis. The aforementioned I-70 project included the building of a new pedestrian bridge over Interstate 64 for Metrolink's Emerson Park Station nearby. Parallel St. Clair Avenue is the former alignment of U.S. 50 through East St. Louis.

Reassurance marker of Interstate 64 east posted above what was the Baugh Avenue westbound beginning and a Norfolk Southern Railroad line. Baugh Avenue now begins from the Exit 4 westbound off-ramp of Interstate 64 and leads into a roundabout with 18th Street.

Exit 5 loops southward over St. Clair Avenue to end at 25th Street midway between Summit Avenue and former U.S. 50. 25th Street heads south two and a half blocks to State Street (former IL 15) at a retail flanked intersection. Northward the road continues to Jones Park and Caseyville Avenue east to Washington Park.

Work was underway at the time of this photo to replace the bridge deck of Interstate 64 over the Metrolink line. Eastbound travelers otherwise continue one mile to a six-ramp parclo interchange (Exit 6) with IL 111 (Kingshighway) and two miles to the cloverleaf interchange (Exit 7) with Interstate 255 and U.S. 50 west.

Interstate 64 enters the city of Washington Park ahead of IL 111 (Kingshighway). A 78 mile route, IL 111 travels north from Centreville to Washington Park and Fairmont City to I-55/70.

Eastbound at Exit 6 to IL 111 (Kingshighway). IL 111 ends 1.5 miles to the south at Lake Drive by Frank Holten State Park. I-64 continues one mile to combine with U.S. 50 east at Interstate 255, a suburban freeway connecting Columbia with Pontoon Beach.

Interstate 255 provides a bypass route for I-55 east of St. Louis for long distance travelers south to Memphis and north to Chicago. U.S. 50 follows the freeway southwest across the Jefferson Barracks Bridge to Mehlville, Missouri.

Construction of Interstate 64 between 1970 and 1972 and the building of Exit 9 relocated IL 157 from parallel 89th Street onto a new four lane alignment below the bluffs. The overpasses for I-64 above the state route were rebuilt in 2007.

Traffic to Exit 12 and IL 159 (Illinois Street) departs I-64/U.S. 50 east after the Ruby Lane over crossing. Congestion at Exit 12 has led to studies to build ramps at an extension of Union Hill Road, midway between the Bunkum Road and Ruby Lane overpasses.

Swansea and Belleville represent the southeastern extent of the St. Louis suburbs along IL 159 south, though growth continues along the state route through Smithton. Originally a diamond, Exit 12 gained two loop ramps, with the most recent from IL 159 south to I-64 east opened November 23, 2011.¹

Green Mount Road was originally named as a part of Schwaegel Road, but developers convinced the county to change the name to Green Mount when the two previously separate roads were linked in 1999.²

Green Mount Road (St. Clair County 89) leads north to US Hwy 50 and south to far flung commercial sprawl of Belleville and Southwestern Illinois College. Areas between Frank Scott Parkway and Lebanon Avenue were developed between 1998-99.²

U.S. 50 continues Air Mobility Drive (Scott-Troy Road) north to rejoin its former alignment at St. Clair 61 (Scott Troy Road north). There, U.S. 50 resumes an eastward course to Lebanon, Carlyle, Salem, and Vincennes, Indiana. The U.S. 50 corridor was the original choice for Interstate 64's alignment east from St. Louis to Indiana. Officials in Evansville lobbied to have the freeway shifted southward to serve the Ohio River city.
