Interstate 70

Interstate 70

Interstate 70 runs for 156 miles from the Illinois border near Terre Haute to the Ohio border east of Richmond. The highway forms the primary west-east highway across the central part of Indiana and follows the routing of U.S. 40 across the state. After multiplexing with U.S. 40 for the first 11 miles in Indiana around Terre Haute the highway heads to the northeast toward Brazil, Cloverdale and Plainfield. Through Indianapolis, the interstate passes the Indianapolis International Airport and Downtown Indianapolis. The stretch from Downtown east to Interstate 465 is the busiest stretch of interstate in the city. East of Indy, the highway runs east past Greenfield, New Castle and Richmond, multiplexing with U.S. 35 for the last few miles. Except for the Indianapolis area, the interstate is four lanes across the state, regardless the traffic along the highway is steady.
