Interstate 70

Interstate 70

Interstate 70 travels only 14.45 miles through West Virginia, entering the panhandle of the Mountain State at Wheeling from Bridgeport, Ohio. Initially spanning Wheeling Island and the Ohio River on the Fort Henry Bridge, I-70 passes north of Downtown to the Wheeling Tunnel. Turning southeast near Fulton and Wheeling University, I-70 winds through the Pleasant Valley neighborhood. A bypass of Downtown Wheeling to the south, I-470 rejoins I-70 from Bethlehem and Ohio at Elm Grove. East of the town of Triadelphia, Interstate 70 angles northeast to the Pennsylvania border, entering the Keystone State ahead of West Alexander.

A $214 million project commenced Summer 2019 to reconstruct Interstate 70 through the Wheeling area, from the Ohio River to Elm Grove. Work includes rehabilitating 26 bridges along the route. The project is scheduled for completion by late 2022.1,2
