Completed by March 14, 2017, an $89 million project replaced the loop ramp (Exit 51 B) for I-40 west with a directional ramp. Work also expanded I-40 between NC 115 and Old Mocksville Road (SR 2158) to six lanes.

A $260 million contract was awarded in December 2018 for widening 7.4 miles of I-40 and I-77 and building the partial turbine interchange between the two. The project is scheduled to run through the end of 2022.2
