Highway 198 - McLain

Mississippi Highway 198

Mississippi 198 represents state-maintained sections of former U.S. 98 through cities and towns bypassed by four-lane alignments. Branches of the route are located at Tylertown, Columbia, Hattiesburg, Beaumont, McLain and Lucedale. U.S. 98 between McComb and the Alabama state line was expanded as part of the Mississippi Department of Transportation's 1987 Four - Lane Highway Program. This included new terrain alignments around existing communities.

The branch for MS 198 at Hattiesburg spurs east along Hardy Street from the exchange joining Interstate 59 with U.S. 98. A commercial arterial, the 1.25 mile long route connects the freeway with the University of Southern Mississippi and U.S. 49.

MS 198 through the town of Beaumont comprises a five mile loop north from U.S. 98. The state highway dog legs along Bradley Avenue, crossing the CN Railroad between Railroad Street and MS 15. MS 15 and 198 overlap southeast from the town center to a folded diamond interchange with the U.S. 98 expressway. The Beaumont bypass for U.S. 98 was constructed by 1992.

Bypassed by 1991, the MS 198 branch through McLain lines Main Street south from U.S. 98 to the town center. The 2.28 mile long route shares an implied overlap with MS 57 north for the return back to U.S. 98. This alignment replaced a bridge across the Leaf River, which permanently closed and was subsequently demolished.

A 0.36 mile long section of MS 198 east of the Leaf River remains in the state inventory. The spur connects U.S. 98 with a boat ramp.
