Route 27

New Jersey Route 27

New Jersey Route 27 travels 38.53 miles northeast from U.S. 206 in the borough of Princeton to Route 21 in the city of Newark.

Generally paralleling U.S. 1 to the west, Route 27 runs northward from Princeton through suburban areas along the Franklin and South Brunswick Township line. Beyond Franklin Park, Route 27 follows the North Brunswick Township line to CR 680 (How Lane), and the New Brunswick city line from there northeast to Main Street in Franklin Township.

Following French Street, Route 27 enters New Brunswick northeast to Albany Avenue at Downtown. Albany Avenue leads the route east to the Raritan River, which the state route crosses into the borough of Highland Park. Turning northward, Route 27 (Raritan Avenue) continues into Edison Township and the borough of Metuchen at Interstate 287.

Within Metuchen, Route 27 follows Essex Avenue east to Lake Avenue north across the AMTRAK Northeast Corridor into Downtown. Middlesex Avenue leads the state route northeast back into Edison Township ahead of the Garden State Parkway in Woodbridge Township.

Route 27 enters the city of Rahway north ahead of Route 35 (St. Georges Avenue). Overtaking St. Georges Avenue, Route 27 diverges from the parallel Northeast Corridor northward to Rahway River Park. Route 27 next passes through the city of Linden northeast to Wood Avenue (CR 617).

Straddling the Linden city and Roselle borough line, Route 27 (St. Georges Avenue) heads northeast to Warinanco Park and the city of Elizabeth. The state route passes west of Downtown along the couplet of Cherry Street north and Chilton Street south between Rahway Avenue and Westfield Avenue (Route 28). Route 27 turns north from Westfield Avenue on Broad Street to Newark Avenue en route to the city of Newark.

Within Newark, Route 27 again parallels the Northeast Corridor, running between an industrial strip along the railroad and Weequahic Park to the west of Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Route 27 passes below both U.S. 22 and adjacent Interstate 78 along Frelinghuysen Avenue. The state route continues north to Poinier Street and a loop ramp onto Route 21 (McCarter Highway) north.
