Route 7

New York Route 7

New York Route 7 is a vital transportation link through the Capital District. Starting out as a two lane road, it enters the area through the town of Duanesburg, intersecting with U.S. 20 and ramps with Interstate 88. The road flows into the western Capital District city of Schenectady, meeting NY 158, NY 337 and NY 146 along a combination of Duanesburg and Curry Roads to Interstate 890. NY 7 combines with I-890 north from Exit 9A to Exit 7. East from I-890 to NY 5, Balltown Road and Union Street, NY 7 follows a four lane, at grade expressway that was anticipated for an Interstate 88 extension through Albany.

Past Union Street, NY 7 continues on as a four lane arterial with a center turn lane, serving the Albany suburbs of Niskayuna and Latham. Within Latham, NY 7 meets Interstate 87 and overlaps with the freeway north for less than a mile. Resuming an eastward course at Exit 7, NY 7 continues from I-87 along a five lane freeway also once proposed as part of an extended Interstate 88. Heading east to the eastern Capital District city of Troy, I-787 ties into NY 7 at Green Island. The two overlap across the Collar City Bridge spanning the Hudson River. East of 10th Street in Troy, the state route narrows onto a four lane boulevard, and eventually back to a two lane road as it leaves the city for the town of Brunswick. Beyond the Capital District, NY 7 continues east to the Green Mountain State of Vermont, where it becomes VT 9 into Bennington.
