Providing a cutoff from NY 39 to NY 19A, the state route initially follows Denton Corners Road east 1.79 miles. NY 19A/436 overlap southward to Letchworth State Park and the community of Portageville along the Genessee River. NY 19A parallels the river south to Fillmore while NY 436 resumes an eastward course to NY 70 and NY 408 in the village of Nunda. NY 436 traverses farm and timberland east across the towns of Nunda and Ossian 13.77 miles to Ossian Street and NY 36 (Dock Street) in Dansville.
NY 436 was designated over NY 245, when NY 245 was truncated west of Naples.
