There are two separate branches of Pennsylvania Route 97 designated in the Keystone State. Located within Adams County, the southern segment runs 9.37 miles northwest from the Maryland line in Germany township to U.S. 15 (Blue-Gray Highway) in Mount Joy township. Inventoried as SR 197, the 21.04 mile long northern section stems west from PA 8 at Union City to U.S. 19 at Waterford, and north from U.S. 19 to PA 8 in the city of Erie.

PA 97 in Erie County lines Waterford Street west 7.57 miles from PA 8 (N Main Street) in the borough of Union City to U.S. 19 (Waterford Pike) in Waterford township. Partially on High Street, U.S. 19/PA 97 overlap 1.40 miles north through the borough of Waterford. PA 97 and U.S. 19 partition on separate courses north to Erie through Summit and Millcreek townships. PA 97 continues along Waterford Street to Interstate 90 and PA 505 (Perry Highway). The northern leg follows Old French Road to PA 8 (Pine Avenue / Parade Street) at 28th Street, two blocks south of U.S. 20.

PA 97 in south central Pennsylvania forms a multi state route with MD 97 south to MD 140 in the city of Westminster. PA 97 follows Baltimore Pike onto Queen Street in Littlestown, and again from the borough to Germantown, Two Taverns and U.S. 15 near Lake Heritage.

Historically, PA 97 in Adams County was a part of U.S. 140. U.S. 140 connected U.S. 15 Business in Gettysburg with U.S. 1 in Baltimore, Maryland. Separate applications from the Maryland State Highway Administration (MDSHA) and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) were submitted to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) for the elimination of U.S. 140. Both were approved on October 29, 1977. Adhering to the AASHTO policy on eliminating routes that are less than 300 miles in length, U.S. 140 was decommissioned because it was only 48 miles long. Sign changes were implemented in January 1979.
