U.S. 13 North - Bear to New Castle

Two sections of old Dupont Highway parallel U.S. 13/SR 1 to the west. The two routes cross Red Lion Creek ahead of the split at Left Exit 156.

SR 273 is a well traveled arterial leading west toward Downtown Newark. Frenchtown Road leads SR 273, 1.34 miles east to SR 9 (Washington Street) and SR 141 (Basin Road) at New Castle.

A lane drop occurs along Dupont Highway north at the forthcoming three quarter cloverleaf interchange with SR 141 (Basin Road) and U.S. 202 north. U.S. 202 commences a seven state route to Bangor, Maine here.

A loop ramp follows for U.S. 202/SR 141 (Basin Road) north. Prior to 1970, U.S. 202 ended at State Road where U.S. 13/40 combine. The route was truncated north to Wilmington until December 1984, when AASHTO approved a southwest extension along both I-95 and SR 141 to Dupont Highway here.

SR 141 measures 11.34 miles in length along an arc from New Castle north and east to Greenville and Blue Ball. The state route between I-95 near Newport and SR 2 at Prices Corner constitutes a full freeway.

The U.S. 13/40 intersection with Boulden Boulevard east and Bacon Avenue west is often congested. Boulden Boulevard connects Dupont Parkway with adjacent Southgate Industrial Park and Moores Lane south leading back to New Castle.

Construction between February 2016 and April 2019 extended the third northbound lane along U.S. 13 (Dupont Parkway) to a loop ramp for I-295 south at the Farnhurst Interchange. The new ramp opened in Fall 2016.

Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) construction at the Farnhurst Interchange in 2001-03 removed a left exit ramp from U.S. 13 south to I-295 north. Adjacent U-turn ramps along U.S. 13 were built in its place.

Entering the exchange with I-495, the northbound entrance ramp departs for Philadelphia. There is no access to I-495 south. A connection from U.S. 13 south to I-495 north was built in 2000 to improve access to Wilimington during the six-month closure of I-95 beyond the city.

Dupont Highway ends as U.S. 13 separates with U.S. 13 Business. U.S. 13 Business extends the highway north onto Market Street toward Downtown Wilmington.

U.S. 13 shifts eastward along Heald Street toward Southbridge in Wilmington. Generally serving local traffic to SR 3 at Edgemoor, U.S. 13 is poorly signed through Wilmington.
Prior to 1970, U.S. 13 ran through Downtown Wilmington along the business route while the easterly course along Governor Printz Boulevard was designated as U.S. 13 Alternate.
