U.S. 93 North - Kingman to Hoover Dam

U.S. 93 (W Beale Street) arcs 3.3 miles northwest from Interstate 40 to Exit 67 for SR 68 west to Bullhead City and Laughlin, Nevada.

Continuing northwest from Kingman, the exit for Nevada State Route 172 (Hoover Dam Access Road) is 70.7 miles away. Downtown Las Vegas is 105 miles via U.S. 93 and Interstate 11, though it is 100 miles via the old route of U.S. 93 through Boulder City and Henderson, Nevada.

Prior to completion of the Hoover Dam Bypass, all commercial traffic was prohibited from crossing Hoover Dam along U.S. 93. Prior to this change implemented due to the events of September 11, 2001, trucks used to line up to cross the dam. Commercial traffic was directed to use SR 68, Nevada SR 163, and U.S. 95 in lieu of the dam until the bypass opened in 2010.

Construction of the Hoover Dam Bypass, an arch bridge over the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, got underway in 2003. It was anticipated for completion in 2007, but the bypass did not open until October 19, 2010.

Prior to October 2010, commercial traffic was directed onto SR 68 west at Exit 67 due to the truck restriction on U.S. 93 at Hoover Dam. The detour followed SR 68 into Bullhead City, westbound SR 163 past Laughlin, Nevada and northbound U.S. 95 through Searchlight to U.S. 93 near Boulder City.

A four lane, divided highway, SR 68 travels 27.5 miles west from U.S. 93 to SR 95 in Bullhead City via Golden Valley and Union Pass (elevation 3,625 feet). Nevada State Route 163 is a four lane highway extending west from the Colorado River and Laughlin to U.S. 95 near the California state line.

Ascending to Housholder Pass across the Black Mountains, U.S. 93 north enters enters Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The park encompasses not only Lake Mead, but also Black Canyon along the Colorado River and Lake Mohave to the south.

Promontory Point rises to the northwest above Black Canyon. Due to the narrow nature of the canyon, strong winds are not uncommon, so high profile vehicles are directed to the inside lanes across the Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.

The old alignment of U.S. 93 ties into the exchange at Exit 2 on the west side. However the old road to Hoover Dam is not open to the public.
