Previously scheduled to open last month, Interstate 885, the East End Connector at Durham, will now open in December 2021. The latest delay is due to the placement of a temporary railroad bridge which is still being used by CSX until tracks are laid on the nearby permanent span. CSX is supposed to lay the tracks on the new span sometime this Summer. When that is finished, the temporary span can be demolished so that the new lanes for the East End Connector can be completed.
This is the third delay for the East End Connector, which started in 2015. The original completion date was November 2019. Overall work on the project will be finished in Spring 2022.
Several new signs for Interstate 885 are already posted. As noted on social media posts, occasionally these become uncovered.
