New Interstate 475?

My co-worker Mark mentioned that in a recent Pinellas County Planning Organization meeting, the concept of upgrading the planned freeway of Bryan Dairy Road (Pinellas County 296), between Interstate 275 and U.S. 19 in St. Petersburg and Pinellas Park, Florida as Interstate 475. He says it was mentioned two or three times in the meeting. I've not found anything on their website to confirm this, nor can I find any [...]

Mommy help, there is a dead US highway ghost under my bed

US 75 originally connected Canada with the Gulf of Mexico at Galveston. That all changed in 1987 when it was truncated to end in Dallas. South of Dallas, the remaining segments that were not on IH 45 became SH 75. Currently, Texas is updating all of its big green signs in the new (and stupid) Clearview font. On the new signs along IH 45, every mention of SH 75 along [...]

I-49! huzzah! SR 549

Ahh, Texarkana. They say it is "twice as nice" but it is not "twice as many interstates nice" because I-49 is not here yet. Regardless of your maps, the freeway stretching south of Texarkana is signed only as AR 549. No "Future I-49" signs here, no sir. Here it is, plus some AR 245 goodness. AR 549 is an all concrete facility, with lanes 2×2 but a small [...]

New Dead Interstate find?

I scored a batch of 1950s-70s highway maps from the New Castle Flea Market in Delaware on Saturday, including a 1959 AAA Northeast Map that displays an Interstate designation I have never seen before. When finding proposed designations, one has to use some skepticism, especially when not discovering such a route on any other maps. Maps are not always that accurate, and some changes such as proposed lines, designations, etc. are [...]

Interstate 95: East Coast Maine Street

I've put the finishing touches on all of our current Interstate 95 main line coverage from the state of Maine online this evening, completing the southbound guide from the Falmouth Spur (unsigned Interstate 495) to the New Hampshire state line. The Interstate 95 guides are the first covering the state of Maine on AARoads. Others including the rest of the Interstates, U.S. 1, etc. will follow. Since the new year, [...]

I-69

A while back there was an interesting story http://www.hoosiergazette.com/News/Nov2004/news003.htm in the Hoosier Gazette about a congressman in Indiana who was convinced by religious leaders to change the number of I-69 to something more "moral sounding". The story noted that the congressman wanted to change the number to I-63 past Indianapolis. The article was fictitious satire, but I'm in a mood for a new interstate number. I-69's extension is sometimes called [...]

Dallas’ High Five

The High Five Interchange, a fixture on the Dallas road scene for years now, is pretty much completed. Let's take a look at it. Dallas High Five Interchange flyovers. The High Five is located at US 75 and IH 635 in North Dallas. This freeway interchange was for years one of the worst bottlenecks in Dallas. Now, several hundred million dollars and many gallons of beige paint [...]

Bridging Escambia Bay, Florida

Interstate 10 drivers have one less issue to worry about when traveling through the Pensacola, Florida area now. Crews recently finished work on the first of two replacement spans for the Hurricane Ivan-damaged bridges over Escambia Bay. The new span, situated just south of the original bridges, currently carries two lanes of traffic in both directions. That is a temporary arrangement as construction workers continue to build the future westbound-only [...]

Pacific Northwest Roadtrip – Day 7 (Kooskia, Idaho to Seattle)

The second day of our marathon drive continued us northeast into the Treasure State of Montana, my first visit there, and then back west via Interstate 90 to Seattle. A bout of allergies made life difficult through Boise, but the sleep I got in Kooskia all but removed the effects of that! We resumed our journey along Idaho 13 north to U.S. 12 east for the eastward trek into Montana. [...]
