I will be posting random road related photos, guess where it's at, each one will be open for 48hrs for guessing. Answers will be given afterwards.

Never been to the northeast before except for Boston (and we flew there), so this is just a wild guess, but, somewhere in the northeast. I have been to the northeast on Google Street View. If I have to be specific, I guess New York. To get even more specific, I guess southern New York. Once again this is a fairly wild guess, so sorry if I'm way off :-D
This reminds me of "Guess The Highway" and related games from the early forum days.

I think this is along I-80 (the Tri-State), just west of the I-90/94 (Borman) split south of Chicago.

Heh. At first it looked like a desert but then I realized it was just a bunch of construction and there were trees in the distance :-D
Also, I like these "Where is Steve at?" things. If I remember correctly from other threads on the forum you are a trucker, so this is a very cool thing to do since you're traveling all over the country. Keep it up!

Doh! Well done. My first immediate thought was I-80 in PA, but the 3 lanes threw me off as there is nowhere that would have them on a downgrade (PennDOT doesn't even bother to maintain climbing lanes to the crest of the hill for that matter). Also, I've never seen the signage shown in PA, and two vehicles with white plates made me think further south......but just not THAT far south (was still thinking VA/WV area).
Here's the location in GSV:

Assuming Roadrunner would be right with his guess, I thought about the area you were in, and this is quite a random guess, but I'd say Interstate 80 in western New Jersey for the other picture. This is my guess because I looked at a section of I-80 in western NJ on Google Maps street view, and it had similar looking asphalt and striping, and at the spot I was at, there were no guardrails or anything in the median. There was also some piedmont (lots of hills). Hope I'm right, or at least close

Well you knew the terrain in that one. More photos to come as soon as i get spaced out in terms of where i am at, since if i take too many from one area it gets too easy to guess where i am at.

In the summer, use the green washer fluid Walmart sells...the Windex bug cleaner...works well.
Also clean off your wiper blades every so often... I just did mine and there was so much shit caked on them, it's a small wonder I could even see when using them. It's like I have new wiper blades again.

Yep. Cleaning the wiper blades, even for car drivers, is a substantial benefit. RainX type stuff also seems to help in the rain.

Neither
I want to say somewhere in the Midwest. Top guesses would be KY, IN, OH, IL, or MO.

Not Missouri. The rumble strips are on the shoulders, not the lines.
There are no embedded reflectors - that rules out Illinois.
The rumble strip pattern is different than Indiana and Ohio from what I've seen.
It's obviously not an interstate as there are driveways on the left.
I'm going to suggest US-20 in Iowa.
Immediately after I suggested NC I realized that it was probably not a good guess since NC doesn't care for full width paved shoulders.
tough one?
Yup...got any more hints? Where IS Steve at?
I thought I was onto something with US 50 in Ohio for a bit, but no dice.

That means the following:

Here's why I'm thinking Arkansas or heading north from there. Based on the clue I have deduced the following, and will in the process either figure out the road or give Steve a good laugh:
The first sentence is some clever wordplay, and his truck broke down near either Success, AR or Success, MO. The second sentence tells me he was hauling a load of Timex watches that day from their facility in North Little Rock. He later went through Wisconsin, so he could pass near either Success since they are to the north of Little Rock. I would err on the side of Success, AR since it's closer to a major corridor (closest to US 67, but I-55 isn't that far away), although he wasn't using an interstate in the photo.
Either that or there's a Timex store near Success, MS. Or none of the above.

I give up. All I can say is that it's somewhere in the Midwest. :-D
US 60/63 in Missouri , I broke down in Licking Mo, which is only 17 miles from Success Mo, and the photo was taken a good distance away, so it was Far from Success.

Odd. Usually Missouri has an annoying habit of puting the rumble strip right on the stripes.
I can't find a spot on the 60/63 concurrency that looks anything like the photo anyway...

How old is the photo? Did they put in the interchanges and close off some driveways recently in that stretch? I'm looking at this area:

I think you may be right. For the past hour, I have been doing nothing but trying to find Steve's location on Google Maps. I have scoped out countless interstates and freeways in the Midwest, and I even covered I-380. Embarrassingly, I only looked at the northern part of I-380. I just now checked out the southern part, and sure enough, the look of the road looks very similar to Steve's picture: https://www.google.com/maps/@41.8210619,-91.6554377,3a,75y,342.85h,86.93t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1simv-M89krp4aHJgDSB-lHA!2e0
Congrats, you beat me to it, and I was so close :)
(that is, if we're correct with our guess of I-380, but it's very likely it's right)

That looks like Illinois. The crappy pavement, the redone area along the lane lines, the two embedded reflectors between every other lanes line, the placement of the rumble strips, and the huge linear potholes between the shoulder and the lanes (I-55 seems very prone to this).
Candidates: I-55 bypass of the one of the towns; I-57 in northern Illinois (between Kankakee & Champaign); I-80.
I haven't the faintest idea of where that picture is from, but where-ever it is from, if that's what the roads are like, then... wow. Even New Jersey's major roadways are in better shape than that. Heck, I'd vouch for Connecticut too.

Close enough roadrunner, and yeah i know i said they would be from different parts but...sometimes i see a neat road scene and feel like posting it even tho i just did one from that state, or i ran across the same state multiple times, during the day, i don't do night photos, not going to say the common roads i take, would make it too easy to guess in the future, but sometimes i just use the same route over and over, so i cannot take photos of it to share more than let's say twice.
Okay Roadrunner, have you been to these places before or are you just throwing out educated guesses? :-P
Give me a few clues, and lots of zooming in and out of Google Street View will do it. For the last one I had IL, not 55/57/80, a pond on the opposite side, and the pavement condition.

I might not have the time until later today or tomorrow to start to find where Steve's at, but from quick inspection of the photo I would suspect that the answer to "What's Steve's Mood?" when the photo was taken is "pretty sour".

I'm still a bit stumped over the last one too. My immediate thought was somewhere along the OH/IN/IL east-west corridor (urban areas, and not the tollways). Got any clues for that one? I also recognize the latest theme: power lines.

Aw, danggit, I was so close again (as said earlier I checked the Indianapolis area)
Well, congrats. Also, I didn't see the date of the photo BC Im on my phone, but it must be fairly old, because the pavement doesn't look as bad there as it does in SteveG's picture.
I checked there too the first time around, and didn't see it. The newest photo looks PA Turnpike-like, but the concrete barrier is a little smaller than their typical spec, and the white lane stripes just a bit too short.

I'm still a bit stumped over the last one too. My immediate thought was somewhere along the OH/IN/IL east-west corridor (urban areas, and not the tollways). Got any clues for that one? I also recognize the latest theme: power lines.
Oh both are still valid, the one with the bumper to bumper traffic....
I stood at the crossroads of a large nation, looking east and west, but i saw nothing but tail lights as far as a man could walk before he would fall down at a door.
It's not Illinois, and not a tollway - the sign for the overpass is wrong.
I'd say somewhere in Indiana. It is not the Borman or anywhere on I-94. It could be the Toll Road, but I'm betting somewhere nearer Indianapolis.

I'd guess either an Oklahoma Turnpike (one of the older ones - Turner, Cimmaron, Will Rogers, HE Bailey, or Indian Nation), or the Kansas Turnpike.

Not to mention that left shoulder is about 5 times as wide as the PA Turnpike's barely foot-wide left shoulder (in 2 lane sections)!

Disagree, I immediately got an Arkansas vibe out of it.
In looking around for the past few photos I've noticed a few other Jersey Barriers lurking in what I would think are unusual places.
I don't think there is any longer such a thing as an unusual place for a jersey barrier. They're freaking everywhere these days. Much to my dismay, I vastly prefer railing.

Didn't notice it there. I am tempted to blur out shields milemarkers and plates for now on.
Denver was fun to visit, made a delivery where my truck partially blocked traffic on a wide side street. Older building not designed for 53ft trailers and conventional cabs. Counted 7 head shops on Business Loop 70.
Dadgum, I didn't notice the shield either. The first time I saw that photo the first thing that popped into my mind was actually I-70 near Denver (Ive even been there before). Oh if only I just checked Street View

That actually looks a lot like the connection to US 40 outside Columbus - OH 158.
http://goo.gl/maps/Ajkzd (http://goo.gl/maps/Ajkzd)
Not the same road, but 158 was the terminus of I-70 into US 40 before the road went through Columbus. They removed one carriageway for the most part and let what's left slowly disappear into nature. It was a stop on the Cbus meet a few years back.

Might this be somewhere heading SE from I-25, maybe along US 87 or further SE heading toward Dallas? You mentioned leaving I-25, and returning to the interstate system - but not necessarily I-25 again. (this is for photo #3 from the previous batch...)

I always had fun doing tit. I have fond memories for said anatomy.
I have been doing a lot of night runs, and have had other things on my mind, and with winter setting in, it is not as safe to take photos at some times. I got some in reserve though, just have to transfer them over.

It was in 2014 too.
That can't be the Indian Nation Turnpike because the median is narrower and raised.
Another Clue: It isn't a limited access road. There is cross traffic.

Looks like a 44 foot median, too, which generally means non-freeway.
Concrete dual highways are pretty rare in Georgia, and they have a variety of configurations with regard to width and material choice for paved shoulders. And most of them, it seems, run north-south.
GA 316 was an obvious early guess, but it has a narrower concrete right shoulder with cast-in rumble strips. The only place where I found the photo's cross section on an east-west highway was on US 76, which is in mountainous terrain. Really, the terrain reminds me most of US 27 where there's a discernable fall toward the Chattahoochee even though the river is quite distant. But US 27 runs north-south, and IIRC it's all asphalt.
I Googlesurfed every newish east-west new-terrain dual highway in Georgia that I could think of, and quite a few north-south ones, too, before that clue was provided. I suppose it's possible that that the highway was actually dualized, but that would be exceedingly rare, to the point that I don't even think such a thing exists.
I could do a better job if my laptop wasn't such a piece of junk, but as it is I pronounce myself stumped. :hmmm:
I'm thinking the E-W segment of GA-515 where it's concurrent with US-76.
The fact it's posted at 65 gives a clue that it's probably not in Georgia ;)
Seriously, though... it might be GA 96 (Fall Line Freeway) westbound between Reynolds and Fort Valley. Limit is 65, concrete road with 44' median and asphalt shoulders with rumble strips, and somewhat hilly. I can't find the exact place in GSV that corresponds with that picture, though, so maybe not.

Based on the Fall Line Freeway comment above, I started checking that out a short while ago too. Also found that area, but I think the full growth of trees threw me off. The westbound GSV with the taller trees closer to the road says 2008, but the EB GSV from 2011 looks more like it, with clearing on the north side at least.

Well, it does. The section in the photo was new terrain, but just west of there the westbound roadway was clearly rebuilt in concrete on the footprint on the previous highway.
Now I wonder if there are others.
All in all, this was a worthwhile if lengthy exercise. Thanks, SteveG1988!

Anyways, good job, and a tornado or something must've taken down some trees there since that 2008 image was taken on GMSV.
The following month was the Mid-May 2008 tornado outbreak sequence (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-May_2008_tornado_outbreak_sequence); I don't know that it affected GA 96, but it did hit Macon a bit to the north.
The trees may have also been cleared in the interim for a rather more mundane reason: logging.
Oh my goodness, now I feel like an idiot :wow:
Despite having heard of it a million times, I've never actually listened to the "Georgia On My Mind" song, and I didn't know who wrote it either. Now I know why Steve kept taking about Ray Charles :-D (I would like to hear the song sometime though, especially since I'm a Georgian myself)
Also, before, I didn't look at the other bound of GA 96 in that street view. At first I thought a tornado could have easily cleared all those trees out, but looking at the 2011 street view and seeing one side of the highway deprived of many of its once-there trees, I think all those trees could have been cut down indeed.

The clues are to a specefic region of the state.
I've been all around what I think is that region, but still no dice. How big of region are we talking about? Local to the particular city that the clues point toward, or a good distance all around?

It's within 50 miles of a city

I know US 35 very well. The only concrete section of rural US 35 in Ohio is in flat, open country. Too much terrain in that pic.
I knew it was in Ohio, but I had been leaning toward I-77 near Marietta.
Ready for the next one. Whaddya got, Steve? (besides spam, Spanish Inquisitions, expired parrots and tips for how not to be seen?)

This was the very first DDI completed in the US. It got a lot of press coverage. I've never been to Springfield, MO, but I knew where this was too.
Haven't driven through that DDI in a few years, but I recognized it immediately, and that was a small image on my phone without being able to read the signs. Something about the pavement colors gave it away.
Drove it shortly after it opened...
I just posted it because it looked generic enough to post. I didn't see the signs when i uploaded it.
I couldn't see the signs well enough to tell where the photo was in the picture.
^^ I couldn't read the signs either. Took it from the pavement colors and that it was the first DDI in America.

I think you went out of your way this time to make sure this road photo looks like it could be just about anywhere, with the least amount of useful items for hints - signage, license plates, etc. I immediately wanted to say "Northeast" with the other traffic Photoshopped out, but I will assume that is incorrect.
As for the second photo, I will guess your driveway in New Jersey.

Not going to narrow it down to a state, but it is in the region, in the Valley.
If I had to guess without crawling along Streetview... somewhere on US 51 north of Dyersburg (https://www.google.com/maps/@36.167084,-89.235398,3a,75y,229.44h,77.91t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1s8RPf5cB6SDBOVP56Ixz1Dg!2e0). Median width is right but the surface in your picture is much better.
A second guess would be TN 22, built to similar specs but I don't think it has so many trees. US 412 thereabouts is also a possibility (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Dyersburg,+TN/@35.98664,-89.342421,3a,75y,13.84h,86.52t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sScZPtBOr1al00RUM-A-SqQ!2e0!4m2!3m1!1s0x887929b40a4deaa9:0x3659044b67c3c572).

My only guess is SR-21 south of SR-585 in Wayne County near Barberton (Akron) OH, although neither of the yellow "Ice-on-Bridge" signs are standard Ohio wordings. But then again, a lot of SR-21 between Akron and Massillon was "different" when I used to travel it.

Nein. I-16 is mostly concrete, that is asphalt.
Aren't pairs of photos supposed to be from different regions of the country? I assume not GA, then?
Sometimes they are the same region.
Is it in Alabama?
When you figure it out you may kick yourselves in the butt.
The second one is eastbound I-24 in Georgia.

I24 in GA is the correct answer. Thought i would give you guys a tough one that is obvious once you realize that the road is a short one.

For the first one, I am going to guess that you were just about to pass under I-81 on the ramp from exit 138 for PA 309 (McAdoo). Specifically, here:

Clean the lens. Photos have a pretty good haze effect going on. And the first one is definitely the 138 ramp. And now I really miss my Grandmother a lot. :(

The lens on my camera is shot, I have yet to figure out what to do with my new camera to make it usable in the truck for these photos, was thinking a proper tripod so i can just click photos. It's a Prosumer panasonic. Takes great photos, and has a 60x optical zoom, but is somewhat bulky and not as good at taking quick photos. It powers up fast, but due to the size it takes a moment to aim it.
For that last one, i will take State and what Interstate you think it is, and Possibly for extra brownie points what region of that state.
You may want to clean your car's windshield, because those photos have a hazy-like effect on them, I'm just giving you advice

It is a really long interstate and is not far from a state border.
The haze is due to a bad lens on my old phone

I was wondering if it was MA 2 in its Super 2 section, but I know the middle markers are much more substantial than that.

To you, what defines the south? is it the mason dixon line? The Ohio River? Is Virginia still truely the south, or does hte south begin on the east coast at NC? or is it a regional thing that extends into some border states of the rivers/lines/etc?

From the hints it could be something in Virginia or NC.

Georgia, Louisiana, or Mississippi come to mind. Sorry for not elaborating. I'm not an expert with which state agencies do what with roads, but that's my guess.

After a bit of research, I can surmise that this photo (if taken from a super-2, as I presume) isn't from VA or NC. My best guess would have to be MD 90 on the Eastern Shore.

It's definitely one carriageway of a normal freeway or expressway being pressed into service during construction.
It's not Missouri, the rumble strips are not on the stripes.
The separation of carriageways could be Wisconsin. It's a common setup there.

Nope, and nope. Definitely Nope.
Another Clue, Time zone is Central.
So, based on that last clue, we can narrow it down to the following 5 states *if* the entire state is in the Central Time Zone...
Wisconson
Minnesota
Illionis
Iowa
Missouri
Or these states if only part of the state is in the Central Time Zone...
North Dakota
South Dakota
Nebraska
Texas

But, it is in the south, and a two-plate state. Texas is one of them. So, I think it is in Texas, but in a state park (probably North Texas).

Getting warmer, but also colder in terms of climate.
Nebraska is a pretty dry state - although I could expect some vegetation.
Kansas is probably likely, due to how much vegetation and crops can grow there.

See, I'm thinking South Dakota based on the numerous 'South' references. But 'South'(bound) could also be referring to the roadway that the 2 way road is on. The East reference could be meaning towards the east of something, such as the eastern part of the state. The hardest part, regardless of the state and highway I'm looking at, is finding ones with A) a concrete roadway, and B) a forested median. Being from NJ, we probably have a surprising number of tree filled and forested medians compared to most states.
Yeah, I could be way off, but that's what I'm leaning towards for now.

Too far north. it's not too far from major rivers.
I now wanna say Minnesota, based solely on how the rumble strips in the photo seem to match up with the placement of rumble strips on I-90. The Ohio River reference earlier is throwing me off though.

Thanks. I was close at one point, but I was looking further south in the area of the state line (crossing the river); I never panned further north. So based on the majority of how this highway looked, I wrote it off.
Anyone got an idea for the new one?
Any clues for the water body it crosses? I'm thinking south this time - more AL/MS.

I cannot really give clues on that, as it is a fairly small body of water. It is a flood plain for a larger river though.

I said getting warmer, wrong road, but not wrong state or river.
For a fresh hint, It is definitevely in the CDT part of the state. It's not far from the border of another state, this road is not in the state for a ton of time, and it has less lanes than it does when it leaves the state.
Sometimes i feel like a nut when i do these, sometimes i don't.

That definitely helped.
Also, what really helped was noticing something faintly seen in the picture: a DOT weather station. Using a website Kentucky has regarding their weather station locations, it was a match. I still wasn't completely convinced though because of the single-side passing zone, until I travelled further back and zoomed in. The treeline seemed to match fairly closely as well, along with the placement of the sign on the side of the road.
Between all of that, I figured it had to be the match.

It's some place in the northern states that uses embedded reflectors and high mast lighting, but not Illinois. This places it in the Midwest somewhere.
But not too far north, because the trees are deciduous.
Definitely Ohio, as they are the state that uses those Black & White accident signs. I will take a stab and say that that is I-475/US-23 between Central Ave (US-20/SR-120) and Airport Highway (SR-2) in West Toledo.

Yep: https://goo.gl/maps/ULs9x
The low building is the Trenton Water Works. The closer tall building is on West State Street in Trenton, and is an apartment tower. The further-away tall building is on the SE corner of Calhoun & West State. It was first built as a Holiday Inn, I believe. In it's more current life, it served as some state offices, although I'm not sure if there's any current use of those offices. On the 1st floor with access to the sidewalk, there's a small deli.
Yep, the tower and the waterworks building was the dead giveaway as well as having driven that road countless times. Plus I know Trenton like the back of my hand.

It looks like a Texas-style frontage road, so Texas? If not, somewhere in the Great Plains? :hmm: :hmmm:
When I glanced at your most recent photo the other day, I was going to remark that it seemed to have a lot of landmarks that should be recognizable to someone, but not me. The signs are just blurry enough that the words can't be read, but I figured those tall buildings in the background would jump out at someone. But again, not me... The orange top to the construction ahead speed limit sign at the far right jump out at someone.
I don't know where this is, but I really blew up the picture and it looked like the first BGS refers to upcoming Exit 273 or 373. Couldn't make out the lettering, though.
it is not in the great plains.

The billboard says "Skydive Midwest." It's a state that uses "NO PASSING" pennants. The BGS is referring to a campus of a college. It's a state that uses blue driver location markers. The parallel freeway appears to be six lanes wide.
It appears to be somewhere on I-94 south (east) of Milwaukee, exit 325 or higher, but I'm not finding an exact match with GSV.

I'm going to be switching phones....again. iPhone 5s this time, and it's mostly due to curiousity about the other OS. So after i do the switch there may be more delays due to me having to figure out the phone. The Zenfone 2 has a scraped up lens, i never put cases on them (the 5s has one tho) so where i store the phone gets bumped around a bit, i need to put some felt in the bottom of it to prevent that.

Beats me. There's a shit-ton of roads like that throughout the Midwest.
A good solid amount of roads in the Midwest and Great Plains look like that.
It is in that region, but you got trouble if you can't pool together on this one.
Got no further than trying to figure out if that light between the blue smudge and road sign was a crescent moon (indicating perhaps you're driving eastward), but eventually decided it looked enough like the other reflections that it was probably also a reflection.
Personally, a contest is more fun when there's some sort of clue within the puzzle. An everyday 2 lane road could be anywhere, and it's not worth the time to try to look around on Google to figure it out.
A sign or a bridge which design is more/less unique to a state helps. Even "Midwest/Great plains" is still pretty much half the country.
