I went to New York City for New Years, and I have a lot of road pictures I'm eager to share (most of them are in Manhattan, with a few from the drive to/from the Atlanta Airport).

Driving to ATL Airport:

Interstate 75 Southbound near Kennesaw, GA with a progressing sunrise in the distance:

On the northern I-75/I-285 interchange getting onto Interstate 285; some sort of construction is underway, and I'd be interested to find out what is being done:

I-285 Southbound right before the GA 154/166 interchange:

Broken pedestrian signal on GA 6 right next to the Chickfila we ate at that morning:

NYC Pictures:

(We walked around & took the subway most of the time, so all the pictures are taken from a pedestrian view)

This section of Madison Avenue has four lanes (all one way of course). The left two are regular, and the right two are bus lanes:

Manhattan has a lot of interesting & unique signage I must say.

(I saw several different "City Speed Limit" signs)

(This is at the edge of Central Park; after I saw this horse & carriage warning sign, I literally saw about 5 horse & carriages pass by on the side of the road; the sign don't lie  :sombrero: )

Manhattan also has a lot of interesting traffic signals. A lot of that I think has to do with the fact that so many streets are one-way, as well as there being a lot of bike lanes on the roads.

(I am splitting this into 2 posts; please do not post until I am done with the second post, which will be done shortly)

Some more photos in Manhattan:

I also walked the Brooklyn Bridge just after sunset, which was super cool!!

(This pic is larger than usual since unfortunately it's rather blurry when smaller)

Bonus (even though it's not road-related): View at night from the top of the Empire State Building:

Driving back home from Atlanta Airport:

Electronic speed limit sign & construction on I-285 near Smyrna:

On northern I-75/I-285 interchange getting onto I-75 Northbound; more construction:

Pedestrian signal that looks to be in rather bad shape on Chastain Road in Kennesaw, GA (right next to I-75):

Interstate 75 Northbound near Emerson, GA:

Well, I had a great trip to NYC, and I hope y'all enjoy the pictures!!

Nice pics! Went down to New York in 2012 back when I lived in Ottawa during the summer. Glad you enjoyed your trip.

Nice pics.

The City Speed Limit signs are (obviously) new, as the speed limit was recently lowered from 30. Interesting to see that they finally adopted the NYS Supplement-Standard "City Speed Limit" sign as seen in the rest of New York, formerly using only nonstandard signage in the very few non-border places a sign existed.

Much of the signage is NYC-exclusive, often having been first introduced long before a national standard existed and designed to occupy a minimal amount of space.. The horn honking signs (most commonly "DON'T HONK" or "NO HORN BLOWING") are very common around the city. And yes, everything less than 5 years old is Clearview.

Very cool! Did you watch the ball drop from Times Square? Can you detail that experience?

I actually did, and it was an awesome experience. Here's a couple of pics of that:

(you can see the ball when it's just starting to drop)

(after that there was some fireworks)

I tried that once about 15 years ago, and it was a pretty miserable experience.  We were about 10 blocks back to the north, penned in like cattle, couldn't see anything and freezing.  I'm glad somebody enjoyed it, and it looks like you got a much better view.  I remember the line on the PATH train on the way back to NJ of people waiting their turn to pee off the back of the train car.  I'm content to watch it on TV now...

I don't envy you having been there, but I will say that my trip to work that morning (my workplace is prominently featured in one of your above photos) was about the least congested it had been the entire month. Certainly less so than the day before (the 30th), which really had me starting to worry as the sidewalks were already crowded in the afternoon and were almost unmanageable by the time the theatres went in in the evening. (I had tickets to Side Show that night.)

But by the morning and early afternoon of the 31st, all was quiet as a mouse!

Wow! Cool shots. How early do you have to get there to get a spot within eyeshot of the ball?

I always wonder how it is for people who see the ball drop.  From what I've heard of it, you get packed in like sardines and aren't allowed to move from whenever you get in until after midnight.  How do people eat or go to the bathroom?

My brother has gone there several times, though not in a while now (maybe he finally outgrew it, though more likely it's due to the fact that our relatives no longer live two blocks from the subway in Bay Ridge and instead live far from any mass transit in Breezy Point). He said the #1 thing (pun intended) is that you do not consume liquids after roughly noon because you will never manage to get back to your place if you try to leave to use the toilet. I assume this would be all the more problematic for the women, of course. If you want food, you bring some with you.

I do not enjoy those kinds of crowds anymore and so have no interest in going myself.

commenting on the Capitals clinching a playoff spot.

"That sounded stupid, didn't it?"
—Kolzig, to the same reporter a few seconds later.
