I still think tying I-73 into I-77 in Mount Airy and abandoning I-74 is better at this stage.

In South Carolina, Horry County wants it, but there's not much appetite for it in the other counties. The Governor didn't even bother including it in the budget. Like in Virginia, I-73 would fall below the existing priorities, like I-20/26 and widening I-95 near Savannah.

I-73 in Virginia is dead for the next 20 years minimum.

Until I saw "at minimum" I was gonna tell you I thought you were being too optimistic.  :-D

Horry County will be happy if they get any sort of interstate connection to Myrtle Beach, whether it's I-73 or something else. An extension of I-40 or I-140 is way more realistic than I-73 is at this point.

Quote from: kernals12 on September 18, 2024, 01:01:22 PMIn South Carolina, the consensus on I-73 seems to be that it's a fantasy project that the state will never be able to pay for, in the same category as the eternally proposed extension of I-526 to John's Island.

At the rate things are going, I-73 is just going to be 2 disjointed sections of freeway near Greensboro, NC.

Time to stick a fork in it.

There's actually about 101 miles of freeway designated as I-73, and it's one segment. At this point, just renumber it to an I-x40 or an I-x85 and be done with it.

I think it would be most poetic if it was renumbered I-x74 considering how much of the planned route would have multiplexed with that interstate.

It would be! Hilariously, you could get two I-x74s out of it if you renumbered only the non-concurrent parts since the I-73/I-74 concurrency is almost 60 miles long.

I agree with this.

Personally, my (possibly unrealistic) plan would scrap I-74 and have I-73 from I-81 at Fort Chiswell, through (former) I-74's planned NC Route, all the way to Myrtle Beach. Existing I-73 north of Asheboro becomes I-173.

We could flip these too, with I-73 scrapped and I-74 staying, plus I-174 instead of I-173.

Still, I would not have either interstate anywhere near Roanoke-Blacksburg.

I like an I-195 using the I-73 alignment east of I-95.

Assuming I-73 gets attached to the MSC, the best I-73 could hope for in Virginia would be ending at VA 57?

Ditching I-73 might be the simplest thing, there's only 40 miles of it that's not attached to another interstate.

Plan B it is, with I-174 taking over the solo-alignment of I-73.

As long as it gets rid of that dogleg from Wilmington to Myrtle Beach

I think I-74 should be the survivor, seeing as how far more of it actually exists in real life.
