I got to the airport a short while ago to fly out to Guadalajara.  Our flight leaves at 11:55 PM west coast time tonight from FAT.  My father in-law realized at the bag check that he forgot his phone at our house.  For some reason my wife had a friend pick her up to go back home to get the phone herself.  I'm not understanding why the friend who lives a quarter mile away couldn't just get the phone and bring it to the airport.   I know this is a small airport but the way my wife is choosing to do this particular operation is adding 20-25 unnecessary minutes.

That may be ideal but it only works if you have a way for the friend to get in the house.

We have a lockbox that the friend knows the code to and I could remotely open the garage.  On top of that my MIL (who can't drive) was home watching the dogs.

Quote from: vdeane on February 10, 2025, 09:37:42 PMThe fact that it's seemingly impossible to get a laptop without an OS preinstalled.  I run Linux and I prefer to set it up myself rather than take the manufacturer's configuration settings, but ever since ZA Reason went out of business, that doesn't appear to be an option.  Framework is the only other company I've seen that offers it, but that requires buying a DIY edition that you need to assemble yourself, and as I learned today, that's easier said than done.  Completely screwed up the bezel installation and now I have a destroyed bezel and probably damaged laptop that I can't even open/close correctly any more.  I'm VERY upset about this and it's left a bad impression of Framework, to be honest.  If they had actual pictures depicting how the bezel is supposed to sit I'm sure it would help a lot, but they don't, just a four-second long video that's over before you've even comprehended what you're looking at.  There's an evening and $1400 wasted.
To update on this: Framework support decided to send a replacement bezel, after managing to guide me on how to remove the destroyed one.  It shipped out Thursday from New Jersey, so that means it should have arrived yesterday or today, right?  Wrong.  It's been looping around and around.  Current delivery estimate is Tuesday, but that's assuming it doesn't take a ride back to NJ again.  Seriously, let's take a look at how convoluted this tracking is:
Package receive in Rockaway, NJ
Package transferred to Teterboro, NJ distribution center
Package transferred to Jersey City, NJ distribution center
Package transferred back to Teterboro, NJ distribution center
Package sent to Albany, NY distribution center (that means this should be close to over, right?  WRONG)
Package sent back to Teterboro, NJ distribution center
Package send back to Albany, NY distribution center

And that's where it's at.  I'm waiting with baited breath to see if it's going to finally make it to my local post office to be put out for delivery or if it's going to get sent back to Teterboro for some reason.

I could see not wanting to rely on the friend if I didn't know exactly where the phone was. The thought of even a close friend going through stuff in my house, looking for something, makes me a little nervous, even if I have no good reason to be.

FWIW my wife was pretty confident the phone was on the passenger seat of her Forester.  Considering how much family and friends she has though, there isn't much people haven't seen in the house.

Why is this significant?

Because I wouldn't even know who Taylor Swift was if not for all the discussion about her. She's never been on my music radar. (Unlike Taylor Dayne, who I once thought sang "Bring Me Some Water" instead of Melissa Etheridge.)

Significance based upon personal ignorance...

Just saw a TikTok where kids didn't know who George Harrison was.  I guess significance diminishes with time.

I couldn't name a Taylor Swift song either until I started dating my wife in 2017.  Thing is, I'm not exactly the target demographic for her music.  It doesn't mean that she isn't popular with younger people or even women my own age.

You've known her for eight years longer than He-Who-Lives-Under-A-Rock Elkins.

I mean hey, I knew Taylor Swift was a famous singer before that.  I'm almost certainly heard her songs even if it was in passing.

Look, I don't really like her music and I am hardly one to get wrapped up in the life of celebrities, but Taylor Swift was long famous before she showed up on NFL broadcasts. Like for almost two decades now.

I never heard of this Michael Jackson guy until he did a halftime show.

How about Autistic People picking on other people with Autism?

Happens every day on the forum practically.  One user on the spectrum will complain about another autistic user behavior.  Hypocritical I must say.  I'm not just talking about me either.

I see plenty of times one user post something and another poke fun or try to correct another who is exactly like the one they pick on.  That, to me, is a classic example of the pot calling out the kettle black.
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

I'm more bothered by the assumption by some that all or even most road fans are autistic.

Nearly 50 years ago I lived and worked in Grand Rapids. I took the bus. On the way home, the bus route went by some kind of workshop place for less-than-abled workers. It was a wakeup to me to hear them talking about some of their co-workers. "She's so dumb ..." I couldn't help but think, "Umm, you're in a sheltered workplace. Just look in the mirror."

My point is that some people on the spectrum might not realize what they are saying about others.

Exactly. Every time someone proudly announces they don't know [insert massively popular current artist] like it's a personality trait of theirs, I want to pretend I don't know the Beatles or someone along those lines, just to see the undiluted irony of their reaction.

Doesn't even have to be a boomer. Plenty of younger people think that hating all mainstream music makes you some sort of transcendent being.

A few years ago Paul McCartney and Kanye West collaborated on a track and there were posts online praising Kanye for giving publicity to a unknown, underground artist like McCartney. They were mostly jokes, but probably a few serious, unironic ones in there.

This also happens.

Not to take anything away from George Harrison, but nobody should be a walking compendium of every one-hit wonder or two-role actor from 40-50 years ago. What happens 80-100 years hence, when the last to enjoy those artists in their prime are no longer around, and after thousands of subsequent waves have also made their impact? History will forget a lot of names, and it's probably entirely...normal.

Likewise, after a certain age point, it's tougher to find current/recent pop culture relatable; not because "it's worse", but there's just an overwhelming sense of ennui because you've been-there-done-that and it doesn't have the same impact. But at least there's less monoculture with many different avenues to choose from, as the decades march onward.

George Harrison was a one-hit wonder?

Familiarity breeds contempt. As someone who has suffered from severe depression for 20 years, the biggest assholes to me about my depression were other people also suffering from serious depressive episodes.
