Quote from: Rothman on November 29, 2025, 08:47:31 AM... I'd want one provided by the company and I'd just keep it outside... :D

Community rules require trash cans be kept "out of view" until sunset the day before trash day (though of course some people seem to think rushing to put their trash out at noon the day before will somehow get it picked up sooner).

Well, enjoy your "summer church camp from hell" neighborhood...
We should have a HOA stories from hell thread if we don't already.

I have lived in this HOA for over 12 years now.  I really should get involved in the governance part, but...

It seemed peaceful for the first few years.  But then issues about vacation rentals came up and that seemed to start the war.  Suddenly we had "political parties" e-mailing us about who to vote onto the HOA board in the elections.

Recently the board president e-mailed us, saying he was quitting because he was sick and tired of all the nasty feedback he was getting about anything he said.

I guess it's like anything political now.  You can get your way, if you can deal with all the criticism that comes with it.  It's not in my personality to deal with that stuff, so I leave the management of the place to others.

The trash issue here isn't a problem.  We have the steel "bear bins" that you have to put your bagged trash in.  Can leave stuff like broken-down cardboard outside the bins, but that's it.  Once a year there's a "$5 Dump Day", everything you can put in a vehicle you can throw into the pile at the transfer station for the $5 fee.  Some people rent a U-Haul truck for the day for that purpose.

HOAs act like privatized towns. Where I am, counties either want or require an HOA to be formed for large subdivisions, essentially to outsource the maintenance of drainage structures and other infrastructure within the subdivision. But between strict appearance standards and neighbors with nothing better to do than to report their neighbors, or complain about someone else's property, it makes HOA neighborhoods undesirable.

Also, the Mini Cooper is a nice car, but it's a little small.  When are they going to start making the full size ones?

Quarterhorses are named because traditionally they are raced for only a quarter mile. (They're sprinters; they don't do so well at longer races).

Quarterhorses are between 56 and 64 inches tall, while thoroughbreds are 62 to 68 inches tall, so quarterhorses are somewhere between 82% to 103% the size of a full horse.

My local ABS station is preempting the new episode of Shifting Gears this week in favor of a "holiday gift guide" special that's basically a paid advertisement from companies like Stewart's.  Looks like I'll never get to see this week's episode!

Perhaps they'll broadcast it at a different time?  Maybe contact the station and ask.
They won't know people care about it if no one asks.

Isn't it on Disney+ or something?  My wife has always streamed it.

Hulu, though it holds for next day.  And, of course, assumes someone happens to have Hulu.  Still requires taking time on the following day (since Thursday is another night with shows I watch).  And, of course, it also disrupts my sense of where in the week I am.  In any case, this is past.

I do find it interesting that both that episode and this week's episode of Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage included a plot about the father of a main character going to the DMV and having issues renewing their expired driver's license.

I've never found it easy to keep track of when shows are on.  To that end at least with streaming services that isn't much of an issue.  Then again, outside of sports I don't really watch much TV in general.  Alien: Earth and It: Welcome to Derry the first shows which have grabbed much interest in probably in over a year.  Sitcoms generally have never been my bag, Shifting Gears struck me as trying to grab nostalgia for Home Improvement.

Those two and Ghosts are the only shows I presently watch live over the air; everything else is streamed.  And yeah, Shifting Gears probably was created for that (I'm not sure if I'm going to continue after this season to be honest, but I'm a completion at heart, so I'm giving it until the end of the season to make a decision).  Georgie and Mandy's First Marriage is better than I expected, though I mainly watch that because I watched Young Sheldon and it's on before Ghosts.  If/when Ghosts ends, me watching non-news stuff live might end with it.  Then again, I've thought that thought before, and something new has a tendency to appear eventually.

Then you just have to keep track of whether the show you want is on Gwep or Pimble this month (or if it's become a Slonx exclusive).

Or just do what I've done several times already, unplug the cable and other like services.  I didn't have cable between 2013 and 2017.  Sports were just fine a bar with a basket of wings and a beer.

I'm way ahead of you—I don't know how to operate a TV anymore, and I don't particularly feel like learning. I'm not sure I can even name a show that's considered "current". I don't really have time for TV, so it's not much of a loss.

A bit of irony from last night.  I was staying in Monterey because of a work thing.  My wife sent me the password for Amazon Prime for the lap top since the Lions playing.  I could have walked down to the hotel bar but I wasn't feeling social.  I had the game open on a browser tab like a radio broadcast while I did other things.

Reddit mods that are dumb as rocks. I tried to ask a question in r/Nunavut about the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road, but it was locked with the message "there are no roads to Nunavut. Closing as this doesn't relate to Nunavut." I reached out saying "What I was asking about was truck registration on the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road, which did reach Nunavut at one point. If someone had experience travelling the ice road into Nunavut, they would be able to answer the question. How does that not relate to Nunavut?"

The response was "No trucks, no highways between communities. If there was mining roads once upon a time, they were likely regulated through Manitoba." Manitoba? What in the actual fuck are you doing as a mod if you can't do a simple Google search for at least enough context to understand what I'm talking about, even if you've never heard of the road before. Just because you haven't heard of it doesn't mean it never existed. :banghead:

I did find the answer I was looking for, so it's a moot point, but I mean really?

Quote from: Molandfreak on December 05, 2025, 12:36:51 PMReddit mods that are dumb as rocks.

Reddit is a toilet. I got banned a couple of weeks ago, and they somehow banned all of my usernames, despite the fact that I used different email addresses for some of the handles. Why? I don't know, they didn't tell me which comment they banned me for. The mods are overbearing and they over-moderate it to the point that it makes this forum look like a bastion of free speech in comparison. They delete posts for no reason, and they micromanage the subs to an obsessive level.

The worst sub on Reddit is r/shortguys. A post from this sub came up in my feed, so I clicked on it and read it. It was almost shocking. Most of the posts are either about how terrible their lives are because they can't get laid, and the only reason is that they are shorter than average, and they want to kill themselves over it or how awful men over 6' are. It's easily the most toxic and venomous and vitriolic forum I've ever seen online, and I'm a usenet veteran from the 1990s. misc.transport.road was all rainbows, peace, love, unity, harmony and unicorns where we all sat around and sang "Kumbaya" and talked about how much we admired each other and how much we agreed with each other compared to r/shortguys. I made the mistake of replying to a post and mentioning my height, and I got banned from the group. If you tell them that the reason nobody will sleep with them is because they have nasty personalities and not because of their diminutive statures, they really have hissy fits. If you tell them that being over 6' doesn't automatically make you attractive to women and it doesn't mean that you have a perfect life, they'll call you "Chad". There are often subtle threats of violence, and sometimes not-so-subtle threats against guys who are above average in height. They are completely delusional, and they think that being tall is the greatest thing in the world, despite the fact that they have no clue what being tall is like. If you remind them that it isn't as great as they think it is, they call you names or remove your comments. They are insufferable and irredeemable.

I don't think that I recall a single positive thing ever being said by any of you regarding Reddit.  Kind of makes me wonder why some of you were on there to begin with given how much misery it seems to induce.

Then again, I think it was K12 who made me aware of Reddit even existing.  I'm sure my opinion on said site which I have never used is inordinately molded by exposure to him.

All this TV talk might as well be in Greek for me. I only watch four things on television: college football, basketball and baseball in season, and AEW wrestling year round. Regular TV shows just don't appeal to me, and I don't watch movies very often because they bore me, they take up too much time and my ADHD distracts me and I realize that I missed half the plot while I was zoned out for 5 minutes. I do like some TV shows, but most of them are out of production. Mostly comedies like Chappelle's Show and cartoons like South Park, Beavis and Butt-Head, Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Archer. I can usually sit through a 30 minute show a lot easier than a 1.5-2 hour movie. The last movie I saw in a theater was Brüno, which came out in 2009.

Perhaps that speaks to how antiquated internet forums have become if the only option left is a complete cesspool?

I don't know, I also regularly hear not so great things from AAroads members about Wikipedia and Twitter also.  The only experience I have is with early Wikipedia and it was pretty crappy even a quarter century ago.  I tend to be of the mindset if webpage is making me unhappy then I'll cut it out of places I participate in.  I rather just drop something rather than complain about it elsewhere online.

You may not have even gotten banned for a comment—lately Reddit started banning people for upvoting the wrong posts. (Though they claim that's restricted to upvoting things like "I wish the President would die" or whatever.)
