Highways You Have Clinched

I like using TM just to log Interstates.  I'm with Max that logging everything would be so much work and frustrating at this point to have it still be fun.

This applies to all topics, not just clinching, for the record. :)

I log all of my travels there because I managed to get a lot of them documented before I really started going on a clinching spree. It's easier to add than it is to start from scratch, so if your "from scratch" is a smaller sample, it's much easier to get into it.

Indiana: counties 100%, highways 100%
Illinois: counties 100%, highways 61%
Michigan: counties 100%, highways 56%
Wisconsin: counties 86%, highways 23%

I have clinched 14 routes in the past week, notably including US 96 (my first 2dus clinch!), three business routes of US 271 (I have now clinched 8 different routes numbered 271?!), four Texas loops (SL 14, SL 96, SL 157, and SL 390 respectively), and my highest numbered clinched route yet, FM 3384.

I agree with the approach of using TM to log the mileage on highway that belong to systems you care about, and that you don't need to care about every type of highway. My route marker photograph collections work the same way: I will choose the set of highways I want and don't want. And no one has the right to assert authority on what highways you should or should not be interested in. You determine which goals you find to be attainable or desirable.

I have clinched 8/9ths of the numbered highway mileage in Illinois--that proportion increased greatly as my pandemic project (I didn't want to leave the state). For that reason, I have most Illinois highways clinched. Aside from that, I only really care about clinching Interstates and some select US highways. I will get some accidental state highway clinches on my route marker photo safaris, but those are back burner goals if anything.

Right now I have clinches of Interstates 12, 15, 17, 22, 24, 27, 39, 41, 43, 44, 55, 57, 59, 65, 68, 71, 72, 74, 76w, 77, 79, 84e, 86w, 88w, 94, 96, and 97. I have clinched US34, US35, and US43, as well as a handful of 3dus: 113, 131, 141, 163, 199, 223, 276, 550, & 641. Other honorable mentions include I-25, which is clinched south of Douglas, WY. I-10 is clinched from I-35 to I-75, plus I-17 to I-19. I-40 is clinched east of Knoxville, I-64 is clinched west of I-75, and I-84w is clinched except for the piece south of I-86 and a small piece near Cascade Locks.
Avatar is the last interesting highway I clinched.

I have clinched I-240 and I-235 in OK, i-235 & I-135 in KS and I-22 since the last time I posted here.

I'll be 46 miles from my third entire 2DI clinch once I get to Little Rock tonight. All I am missing is from its I-20 terminus to US 75 in Dallas.

Clinched MO 16 a few days ago, and clinched US 54 in Illinois and east of 61 today.

Max Rockatansky

In the numbered Highways game I clinched all the Hawaii Routes and County Routes on Kauai this past week.

Clinched I-27, I-30 (entire), I-820, I-635, I-35E (TX), I-35W (TX), the available segments of I-69C and I-69E in TM, and, last and absolutely least, I-345...

ETA:  Oh, and I-2 (entire).

Well my parents still have more mileage on I-2, I-69C, and I-69E than me.

I just clinched CO 63 a few weeks ago, but that may be my last clinch of the year. I'll end the year with a total of 123 highways clinched.

Got I-185 in Georgia clinched yesterday.
May or may not be batticorn.

I also collect traffic lights, road signs, fans, and railroad crossing equipment.

CO63 was pretty boring (like most eastern Colorado routes), but I liked the northern part of its sibling CO61.

That's the only part of CO 61 that I've been on, and, like the wind turbines, I was a big fan. I'll drive it again this January on another clinching trip.

I think LA 3258 was my last clinch of the year. It appears I clinched 75 routes this year if I'm counting right?

Rung in the new year with my best clinching day of all time yesterday, with 13 routes in one day, most of them being extremely obscure.

Highlights:
- TX 110 (at 82 miles, the longest route I clinched)
- Four business routes of TX 78
- Three FM roads and three Texas spur routes

I took a little clinching trip to Nebraska last week, clinching US 138 (only my third US Highway clinch), CO 55, CO 11, and NE L-56G. I got a lot of non-clinch mileage in Nebraska as well, mostly on US 30, NE 61, NE 92, and NE 97.

US138 was my second US highway clinch if I'm not mistaken.

When I first used TM, I figured...okay, Interstates, US Routes, and then just Florida and Alabama's state-maintained roads. After I was done with that...well, I should include Georgia and Tennessee, since there's lots of roads that cross over into those states.

Then it was making exceptions for enough states that it became a bit of a compulsion; if this, why not that? You know, so the next time you visit Colorado, Rhode Island, or Wisconsin, you'll know which routes  and what sections you've already driven?

So it probably took me about 6-7 months to get everything in there, spending about 15-30 minutes vaguely every other day on each state, reviewing the Log File the next day for any errors. It really helped that I'd taken a metric crap ton of photos about 95% of the time.

Similar story. Mine was only interstates at first. Then I figured I'd do CO highways to see how many I had done. Then I figured I'd do anything in the US. Then international. I don't know if my international is up to date since they keep adding systems, but at least they're there.

I guess I was lucky. I kept some fairly "coarse" logs for the 15 cross-country trips I took in the 90s, but when I moved to California in 2000, I started doing detailed logs of all the exploratory trips I did in SoCal, and my few forays into neighboring states. This was long before I thought of "clinching", or had heard of anything like TravelMapping. In about 2007, I got GPS, and kept those logs of every trip where I went somewhere new, or took pictures. So I had a ton of data available when I started on TM, and the many hours it took to transcribe it all wasn't unreasonable for a hobby. Maintaining it only takes maybe an hour a day during a road trip, which is better than watching TV in the motel room after dark.
