Quote from: hotdogPi on June 16, 2026, 12:46:09 PMThis isn't even the first time he's said "hanging is lethal" this week, and I don't get the context in the other thread either.

Which is why I asked what he was on about.  I knew he had made at least one other hanging reference recently in another thread.

I would prefer a visual confirmation for every foul, call, substitution, free throw, interception, timeout, change in possession, punt, etc. Not just the score, time remaining, and some ancillary information. I feel like it would make following along a lot easier by cutting out the guesswork if you happen to miss something.
You would have hated watching sports before the mid-90s or so, when they didn't even show the score and the time remaining. (Also, visual confirmation for free throws, interceptions, and punts? Isn't the visual confirmation the part where you watch it happen in the game?)

FOX was the first American broadcaster to introduce the on-screen time and score graphic (just those two elements) to US sports when it first started airing the NFL in the fall of 1994. Not coincidentally, that came right after the US hosted the World Cup, during which ABC and ESPN used on-screen time and score graphics because of the lack of commercials (they put sponsor logos next to the score). NBC was the last holdout. The head of NBC Sports was dead-set against such graphics because he thought viewers would be more likely to change the channel if they saw the score and decided it was too much of a blowout or whatever.

FOX's original graphic looked like the one seen below. Obviously, they've come a long way since then in terms of the amount of information they can pack into those things. Notice it didn't give the down and distance, let alone timeouts remaining.

"You know, you never have a guaranteed spot until you have a spot guaranteed."

I actually think there is *too much* information being given. I don't know if the secondary on-field down and distance graphic is really needed since it's on the scoreboard. Does it get in the way? No. Is it clutter? Arguable. The toying with virtually shading strike zones/showing where the pitch crosses in real time, and likewise digitally shading the yardage between the line of scrimmage and the first down marker has felt like too much sometimes. As is ESPN having a  digital nameplate for the playerr possessing the puck on power plays during hockey.

No, I was referring to the graphic at the top left corner of the screen, the one that stayed on constantly. The one you're highlighting didn't display at all times.

Every streaming service is now setting themselves up to play a random movie/show once the one you selected is done (and cuts into the credits with the default action being switch to the random movie/show. Most of them don't have a method to turn that off either. (only Prime Video and Apple TV library don't random select - though Prime Video likes to suggest some new ones on the footer - or ask if you like the video (#YouTube)

I meant when it's called, not when it happens. Like this:

[SHOOTING FOUL BY: DOE <<>> 2 FREE THROWS: SMITH]

And then it goes away before the free throws are attempted.

Correct, but only if authorized by the President.  I pointed this out last year:

Quote from: kphoger on August 29, 2025, 02:16:48 PMUnfortunately, military dolphins have not yet been tested against alien attacks.  This is because, ever since the AQUAMAN (Always Question Underwater Actions, Maneuvers, And eNgagement) Act of 2017, their deployment has required direct authorization by the US President.  Obviously, that's not going to happen anytime soon—not after what happened in San Francisco two years ago.

Nope. It's the only one I've been getting. As soon as I try to leave their home page and look at some other section of the site, I get the error message.
