The northern branch of CR 587 in Pasco County constitutes an 11.23 mile long loop northeast from the city of New Port Richey. With 1.46 miles in Pasco County, the southern leg of CR 587 is part of Gunn Highway traveling south from SR 54 at Odessa to SR 580 (Busch Boulevard) and SR 597 (Dale Mabry Highway) at Carrollwood outside Tampa. There is also a separate section of CR 587 north from County Line Road (CR 578) through Spring Hill in Hernando County.

CR 587 lines Massachusetts Avenue 2.81 miles east from Grand Boulevard (CR 595) to New Port Richey East and CR 1 (Little Road). The county road continues 3.53 miles east along De Cubellis Road to CR 524 (Ridge Road) at the unincorporated community of River Ridge. Moon Lake Road leads CR 597 north 4.89 miles to Moon Lake and SR 52 by the Pine Ridge at Sugar Creek and Verandahs developments.

CR 587 commences along Massachusetts Avenue east from CR 595 (Grand Boulevard) within the city of New Port Richey. Neither route is signed at their intersection.
