SR 438 begins at a parclo interchange with SR 429 (Daniel Webster Western Beltway) and travels east 0.399 miles along Franklin Street to SR 437 (Ocoee Apopka Road). SR 438 dog legs north alongside SR 437 for 0.106 miles to Silver Star Road. Silver Star Road extends the state road east through Pine Hills as a four to six lane arterial for 7.248 miles to a realignment away from Silver Star Road (SR 416). SR 438 shifts southeast onto a 2.165 mile long four-lane arterial to Princeton Street and U.S. 441 (Orange Blossom Trail).

Continuing east from Orange Blossom Trail (OBT), SR 438 splits into a couplet of Princeton Street east and Smith Street west to end just 0.226 miles beyond U.S. 441. The state road previously extended east through College Park, Orlando along Princeton Street to Interstate 4 and SR 527 (Orange Avenue).

Three sections of CR 438 are assigned in Orange County. An unsigned segment extends east from Rio Grande Avenue along Princeton Street through College Park. A partially signed section emerges along Plant Street west from Brandy Lake in Winter Garden to Tildenville School Road (CR 545) and Oakland Avenue through Oakland. A north-south branch of CR 438 links SR 50 (West Cololnial Drive) with Oakland Avenue along Tubb Street in the town of Oakland.

CR 438 through Oakland and Winter Garden are part of the 45 mile system of roads comprising the Green Mountain Scenic Byway. Established by FDOT on July 19, 2004, the scenic highway connects a number of small towns and nature preserves around Lake Apoka between Winter Garden and Mount Dora.
