The city of Deltona originated as a Mackle Brothers idea of a master-planned community for retirees in 1962. Work broke ground and by April 1963, Deltona welcomed its first residents. Incorporation however did not occur until December 31, 1995 (City of Deltona, 2001) and as of the 2020 Census, Deltona was home to 93,692.

DeBary incorporated in 1993 to prevent the possible annexation by Orange City to the north (Stein, 2005).

Orange City, incorporated in 1882, was started by Dr. Seth French and company in 1874 with a purchase of around 5,000 acres. The town derives its name from the thousands of orange trees planted in the area (City of Orange City, Florida, 2009).

The city of DeLand was founded by Henry A. DeLand in 1876 with a purchase of $1,000 plot of land. The Volusia County court house was relocated from Enterprise to DeLand in 1887. The municipal airport was originally a naval airbase built by the Navy during World War II (City of DeLand, 2008).

Henry A. DeLand founded Lake Helen in 1883. The community was named after his daughter Helen (Volusia.com, 2008).
