Interstate 4 West - I-75 to Tampa

Hillsborough Avenue comprises a four to six lane arterial across the city of Tampa. Busch Gardens lies north of U.S. 92 via N 40th Street.

$5.8 million in construction underway from May 9, 2025 to Fall 2026 adds an auxiliary lane from SR 574 to the split diamond interchange (Exit 3) with U.S. 41 (N 50th Street) and Columbus Drive (FDOT, 2026).

Completed in 2006, expansion of I-4 at Exit 3 included the southward realignment of Columbus Drive onto a S-curve, a wider freeway right of way and new ramps. The succeeding exit joins I-4 west with the Selmon Connector to Port Tampa Bay.

Exit 3 departs I-4 west for U.S. 41 (N 50th Street) and a service road to Columbus Drive. Turning west along Melburne Boulevard nearby, U.S. 41 northbound leads to N 40th Street at East Tampa. SR 583 (N 50th Street) branches north from U.S. 41 toward the city of Temple Terrace.

The Selmon Connector links I-4 west from Exit 2 with SR 618 (LeRoy Selmon Expressway) west ahead of Downtown Tampa. Located 3.2 miles beyond U.S. 41, Exit 45 A joins the west end of I-4 with Orange Avenue south toward Florida Aquarium and Benchmark International Arena.

Opened on January 6, 2014, the Selmon Connector is an elevated toll road connecting Interstate 4 with parallel SR 618 (Leroy Selmon Expressway) to the south of Ybor City.

A split diamond interchange joins I-4 with 22nd and 21st Streets at Exit 1. Until the adjacent Selmon Connector was completed, SR 585 through Ybor City was the truck route between I-4 and Port Tampa Bay.

The Port Tampa Bay Cruise Terminals are located along Channelside Drive southwest of Ybor City. The Ybor City Historical District centers around the commercial strip along 7th Avenue (CR 574) between Nuccio Parkway and N 22nd Street.

Exit 1 lowers from I-4 west to E 14th Avenue at N 22nd Street. Prior to 2015, SR 585 ran north along 22nd Street from U.S. 41 Business/SR 60 (Adamo Drive) at Ybor City to U.S. 41/92 (Hillsborough Avenue) at Seminole Heights.

I-4 spans N 26th Street, one mile from the Downtown Interchange with I-275. Interstate 275 constitutes a heavily traveled commuter route between Tampa and St. Petersburg. This overhead was installed in Spring 2007.

Following the original route of I-75, I-275 branches west from I-75 at Wesley Chapel in Pasco County to I-4 at Tampa Heights. Westward from I-4, I-275 continues north of Downtown en route to Westshore, Tampa International Airport (TPA) and the Howard Frankland Bridge over Old Tampa Bay to St. Petersburg.

The three wye interchange joining I-4/275 was reconstructed between October 22, 2002 and December 22, 2006 as part of an $81 million project upgrading 2.7 miles of roadway (FDOT, n.d.). Underway from Fall 2023 to early 2027, the Downtown Tampa Interchange (I-275/I-4) Safety and Operational Improvements project adds additional lanes from the west end of I-4.

A single lane ramp departs from the Downtown Interchange for I-275 north to Seminole Heights, Sulphur Springs and Forest Hills in north Tampa. I-275 north converges with I-75 in 15 miles. I-75 continues from there 76 miles to Ocala and 110 miles to Gainesville.

Prepare to stop when flashing signs were installed at the Downtown Interchange in August 2019. Traffic congestion is routine at the exchange.
