The I-5 Mounts Road to Thorne Lane Interchange - Corridor Improvements project underway from July 2015 to December 2025 widens seven miles of I-5 from DuPont to Lakewood. Completed in September 2018, Stage 1 extended the northbound auxiliary lane from Mounts Road to the existing auxiliary lane beyond Center Drive (WSDOT, 2025).

Stage 3 construction from 2023 to 2026 replaces the diamond interchange with at Exit 119 with a new half diverging diamond interchange joining I-5 with a realignment of DuPont-Stellacoom Road spanning the adjacent UP Railroad to a new roundabout (WSDOT, 2025).

Costing $243 million, Stage 2 construction, from Steilacoom-DuPont Road to Thorne Lane, added a new HOV lane in each direction of Interstate 5. Work ran from Fall 2018 to substantial completion in September 2021 (WSDOT, 2024).

One of the projects completed during the 2000 to 2022 I-5 - SR 16 Tacoma/Pierce County HOV Program was the reconstruction of the Nalley Valley Interchange. Started in 2008, work completed in stages in 2011, 2014 and December 2019 upgraded the exchange with new high-speed ramps, flyovers, and HOV connections. Adjacent work along SR 16 replaced the Nalley Valley Viaduct, which dated back to 1971, to accommodate a wider freeway and HOV facilities (WSDOT, 2022).

I-5 - SR 16 Tacoma/Pierce County HOV Program construction expanded I-5 to four roadways between SR 16 and the south end of I-705. Exit 132 departs as a c/d roadway for 38th Street, SR 16 and I-705/SR 7.

Exit 134 leaves Interstate 5 north at the L Street overpass for E 28th Street to Portland Avenue. 28th Street also connects with the wye interchange (Exit 135) where SR 167 eastbound begins.

SR 167 (River Road) runs along the Puyallup River southeast to SR 161, where it dog legs north onto a freeway 6.50 miles from I-5. SR 167 heads north through Sumner, Auburn and Kent. The state route travels 28.6 miles between Tacoma and Renton, 19.26 miles of it along freeway.

Continuing east across Fife, Interstate 5 spans Wapato Creek ahead of the six-ramp parclo interchange (Exit 137) with 54th Avenue E and the northbound beginning of SR 99.

South from Exit 137, 54th Avenue E curves onto Valley Road southeast to North Puyallup. SR 99 north joins Pacific Highway east from 54th Avenue E nearby. Turning north, state route parallels I-5 through west Milton into Federal Way in King County.

Part of the Puget Sound Gateway Program constructs a new freeway joining SR 509 with Interstate 5 from the north and with SR 167 to the south. Work on the final two miles of SR 509 got underway in 2024 and runs through 2029. The last of the three stages building SR 167 is scheduled to open in 2029 (WSDOT, 2025).
