Interstate 12

Interstate 12

Interstate 12 travels 86.65 miles wholly within the state of Louisiana. Providing a regional bypass of the Greater New Orleans area, I-12 connects the capital city of Baton Rouge with I-55 at Hammond and I-10/59 at Slidell. The freeway is also a commuter route from Baton Rouge east to Denham Springs and Walker in Livingston Parish.

Work on I-12 from U.S. 61 (Airline Highway) in Baton Rouge and Hammond was ordered on July 6, 1965.1 The section of I-12 between LA 63 at Livingston and Interstate 55 at Hammond opened to traffic on February 15, 1970.2 The segment between Livingston and Albany was already completed by December 1969, but not yet opened as routing traffic off U.S. 190 to I-12 and back via LA 63 and LA 43 would increase the distance and result in traffic jams due to the detours.1
