Interstate 69

Interstate 69

Signed along portions of the Purchase, Western Kentucky, and Pennyrile Parkways, Interstate 69 travels 126.805 miles through the Bluegrass State. I-69 serves to connect Fulton, Mayfield and Benton in the southwest with Madisonville and Henderson in western reaches of the state.

Interstate 69 commences along the Julian M. Carroll (Purchase) Parkway north from the Tennessee state line at Fulton. I-69 follows all of the Purchase Parkway northeast to the Graves County seat of Mayfield to Benton before turning north to I-24 near Calvert City. I-69 joins I-24 for a 17 mile overlap across the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers as the two angle northeast to the Wendell H. Ford (Western Kentucky) Parkway near Eddyville.

While Interstate 24 turns southeast for Clarksville, Tennessee, I-69 proceeds northeasterly along the Western Kentucky Parkway, bypassing Princeton and Dawson Springs to the north en route to Nortonville and the Edward T. Breathitt (Pennyrile) Parkway. Meeting at a directional cloverleaf interchange (Exit 106), Interstate 69 turns north along the Pennyrile Parkway for Madisonville and Henderson. I-69 concludes at U.S. 41 (Exit 148) ahead of the Audubon Parkway (KY 9005) and Henderson.

Construction is underway for extending Interstate 69 northward across a new Ohio River crossing into Indiana near Evansville. Split into three sections, Section 1 work both upgraded the U.S. 41 freeway bypass around Henderson to Interstate standards and constructed 2.5 miles of new roadway east from U.S. 41 to U.S. 60. A ribbon cutting ceremony marked substantial completion of this project on November 3, 2025. I-69 was extended three miles north alongside U.S. 41 as a result. Opened to traffic on November 10, 2025, Future I-69 east to U.S. 60 is designated KY 3690.

To be built in two sections, the Ohio River Crossing (ORX) project will connect the Kentucky and Indiana portions of I-69. North of the Ohio River, construction from 2024 to late 2026 builds some of the bridge approaches. Work on the toll bridge spanning the river is anticipated to run from 2027 to 2031.

Construction on the $33.9 million project upgrading the westernmost 21 miles of the Julian Carroll-Purchase Parkway to Interstate standards wrapped up in December 2024. With work completed, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) officially added the roadway to the National Highway System (Latek, 2024).
