Interstate H-2 is a suburban freeway joining I-H1 and Honolulu with the communities of Waipio, Mililani Town and Wahaiwa in the broad valley between the Waianae Range and Koolau Range. Named the Veteran's Memorial Freeway, I-H2 also serves military interests to Wheeler Army Airfield (AAF) and Schofield Barracks. The freeway includes an HOV-2 in each direction between I-H1 and Exit 5 A / Meheula Parkway.
Designed to link Pearl Harbor via I-H1 and Wheeler AAF, Interstate H-2 was part of the 1960 plan of freeways for Honolulu. Construction on the freeway began in 1972 and was completed in 1975. Today, I-H2 primarily serves commuters from inland Oahu to Honolulu, and has corresponding peak flows during the morning and evening commutes.
