State Road 3

Indiana State Road 3

Indiana 3 goes for 223.5 miles from Clark County in Southern Indiana to LaGrange County in the far northern tier of the state. The highway was continuous until 1972, when the section from Markle to Fort Wayne was decommissioned. Today, the highway exists in two segments.

The first begins at the intersection with Indiana 62 in Charlestown and stretches to the north to Indiana 7 in Vernon and beyond through the city of North Vernon. From there, the highway continues to Greensburg where it multiplexes with Indiana 46 for a few miles. After passing Interstate 74, the highway heads north to Rushville and then to Interstate 70, where it becomes a four-lane expressway through the city of New Castle and north to Muncie. The state road becomes a part of the Muncie Bypass, a freeway-like highway that bypasses Muncie to the east. Leaving the bypass, the highway heads north through Hartford City before ending at U.S. 224 in Markle.

The northern segment of the highway picks up at Interstate 69 in Fort Wayne and is a four-lane expressway through Fort Wayne's northern suburbs and up to Kendallville in Noble County. From there, the highway continues north through rural LaGrange County to its northern terminus at Indiana 120 in Brighton.
